ANSWER KEY CHEMICAL BONDING WS 2

1 On the basis of VSEPR theory, predict the shapes of the following molecules and ions:
(i) PH3
(ii) NH3
(iii) NH2–
(iv) H3O+

ANS: (i) PH3 has 3 bond pairs, one lone pair, it has pyramidal shape.
(ii) NH3 has 3 bond pairs and one lone pair, it has pyramidal shape.
(iii) NH2– has 2 bond pairs and 2 lone pairs, therefore, it has V-shape or bent molecule.
(iv) H3O+ has 3 bond pairs and one lone pair, therefore, it is pyramidal.

2 Compare the dipole moment of the compounds in each of the following sets:
(i) CHCl3, CCl4
(ii) CF4, SF4
(iii) BF3, BCl3
(iv) CO2, SO2

ANS: (i) CHCl3 has higher dipole moment than CCl4.

(ii) SF4 has higher dipole moment than CF4.
(iii) BF3 and BCl3 have zero dipole moment or bent molecule.
(iv) SO2 has higher dipole moment than CO2.

3 Arrange the following in decreasing order of ionic characters of the bond and give reason:
NaF, NaBr, NaCl, NaI

ANS: NaF > NaCl > NaBr > NaI

Greater the difference in electronegativity, more will be ionic character.

4 The correct order of dipole moment is

(a) CH4 < NF3 < NH3 < H2O
(b) NF3 < CH4 < NH3 < H2O
(c) CH4 < NH3 < NF3 < H2O
(d) < H2O < NH3 < NF3 < CH4

ANS:
(a) CH4 < NF3 < NH3 < H2O
Greater the polarity, more will be dipole moment. In < NF3 nitrogen is less electronegative then ‘F’ so
dipole moment decrease as dipole are towards
fluorine.

5 Which of the following is an electron deficient molecule?

(a) C2H6
(b) B2H6
(c) SiH4
(d) PH3

ANS: (c) SiH4

∵ Octet of Boron is not complete.

6 Which of the following molecules all bonds not equal?
(a) PCl5
(b) SF6
(c) BF3
(d) AlF3

ANS: (a) PCl5

∵ Three bonds are in horizontal plane at 120°, two are in vertical plane 90°, axial bonds are longer
and weaker than equatorial bond.

7 Which of the following is polar molecule?

(a) SiF4
(b) XeF4
(c) BF3
(d) SF4

ANS: (d) SF4

It is polar molecule with dipole moment, other have dipole moment = 0 due to their symmetrical shape.

8 Predict the correct order

(a) bp – bp > lp – bp > lp – bp (where bp is bonded paper and lp is lone pair of electrons)
(b) lp – bp > bp – bp > lp – lp
(c) lp – lp > lp – bp > bp – bp
(d) lp – lp > bp – bp > lp – bp

ANS: (c) lp – lp > lp – bp > bp – bp

Lone pair have maximum repulsion with lone pair, followed by lp – bp, minimum bp – bp.

9 Which of the following isoelectronic and isostructural

(a) CO32–, NO30–
(b) ClO3–, CO32–
(c) SO32–, NO3–
(d) ClO3–, SO32–
ANS: (a) CO32–, NO30– CO32– has 6 + 24 + 2 = 32 electrons, NO3– has 7 + 24 + 1 = 32 electron. Both
are triangle planar.

10 The species which has bond angle 120°

(a) ClF3
(b) NCl3
(c) BCl3
(d) PH3

ANS: (c) BCl3

It has trigonal planar shape with bond angle 120°.

11 Decreasing order of stability.

(a) O2 > O2+ > O22– > O2–
(b) O2– > O22– > O2+ > O2
(c) O2+ > O2 > O2– > O22–
(d) O22– > O2– > O2 > O2+

ANS: (c) O2+ > O2 > O2– > O22–

Greater the bond order, more will be stability.

12 The number and types of bonds in calcium carbide and

(a) 1σ, 1π

(b) 2σ, 1π

(c) 2σ, 2π

(d) 1σ, 2π

ANS: (d) 1σ, 2π Ca2+(C≡C)2– has 1σ, 2π bonds.

13 Which of the following molecules is expected to be diamagnetic?

(a) S2
(b) B2
(c) N2
(d) O2

ANS: (c) N2

14 The bond order for O2+, C2 are

(a) 2.5, 2
(b) 2, 3
(c) 3, 2
(d) 1.5, 2.0
