Compliance recommendations
Any time you install, change, or uninstall software or system modules in a regulated environment,
Waters recommends that you follow your organization's approved standard operating procedures.
A risk-based review may assist you in a regulated environment to evaluate changes detailed in
the release notes. Using company SOPs, determine if any documentation updates and
requalification of the system modules, chromatographic system, or chromatographic data system
(CDS) are required.
• To confirm that the new files loaded properly, consider performing a software installation
qualification.
• To confirm the operation of the newly loaded software, consider performing an operational
qualification (user or vendor) for the updated software installation.
• To determine if additional testing is required, consider evaluating the changes in the software
release, to assess the risk associated with the installation. Depending on the risk, it may be
appropriate to perform existing, updated, or new software tests. These tests may be known as
performance qualification tests, user acceptance tests, verification tests, or validation tests.
To assist you, if required, Waters provides various levels of Qualification (or Compliance)
Services and validation consultancy through our Professional Services organization.
When multiple, identical systems are involved, consider a risk-based approach to qualification
activities.
Note: Support includes English, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, and Korean distributions of
Empower 3 software.
Driver compatibility
Empower 3 Feature Release 4 requires Driver Pack 2017 Release 1 drivers to operate on
Windows 10.
See: For information on DP 2017 R1 refer to the Waters Driver Pack 2017 Release 1 Release
Notes.
Note: The NuGenesis SDMS Win 10 client supports both Windows 10 and Windows 7. For SDMS users, NuGenesis SDMS Win 10 client
is required when using Empower 3 Feature Release 4 for both Windows 10 and Windows 7.
Note: Waters products are structurally validated on a given platform. If you use an untested platform, you assume the risk that Waters
has not tested that specific platform. Entries with an asterisk (*) are supported under risk assessment given our knowledge on the software
See also: The Empower 3 Installation, Configuration, and Upgrade Guide for complete
installation instructions and the Waters Ethernet Instrument Getting Started Guide.
Installation note
When installing an Empower server, a warning message appears when the system does not
meet the recommended number of hard drives (four separate drives for Enterprise or two for
Workgroup). This message is for informational purposes only. The number of drives is a
recommendation, not a requirement. The installation can proceed without the need to change or
add drives.
Note: This procedure was tested using Waters hardware. If you are using non-Waters
computers, you may notice differences in this procedure. Contact Waters for assistance.

Revision A
• Empower 3 FR4 System Administrator's Guide, Waters part number 715005267, Revision A
46873
Previously, incorrect numbers were calculated when the peak's response was zero and the
calibration curve's fit type was set to Log-Log Linear or Power Curve. Now, when the response is
zero and the fit type for the component is set to Log-Log Linear or Power Curve, the peak's
amount is not calculated and a Q27 processing code (Quantitation Issue) is added to the peak.
53973
Previously, in Review, you could manually integrate peaks within unsaved results that were
previously processed with a different processing method. Now, unsaved results are cleared when
a user switches between processing methods in Review.
54074
Previously, when searching the PDA library, if you filtered the peaks of a chromatogram based
on the retention window percentage specified in the Retention Time Presearch field, the
chromatogram did not filter the peaks according to the percentage specified. Now, when you
specify a retention window percentage in the Retention Time Presearch field in the PDA
Library Search tab in the processing method, the peaks of a chromatogram are filtered based on
the Retention window percentage specified.
54145
Previously, if you changed the vial amounts associated with a sample set method in the Alter
Sample window after results were generated, the sample set method associated with the altered
results was incorrectly reported in Report Publisher. Now, when you change the vial amounts in
54293
Previously, when you specified a Search Depth in the processing method to limit the number of
search results when searching the PDA library, the Empower software did not limit the search
results as specified in the Search Depth field. Now, when searching the PDA library, either by
using Interactive searches within the Review window or by using the processing method to
automate library searching using background processing, the number of search results is limited
based on the level of the search specified in the Search Depth field.
54479
Previously, the Total Impurities were calculated incorrectly when using an Impurity RRF value
other than 1.0. Now, theTotal Impurities values are calculated correctly with all Impurity RRF
values. Additionally, named and timed groups now display as follows:
• Those with a blank component type have a blank impurity response and a non-blank impurity
response value.
• Those with a non-impurity component type have blank impurity response and impurity
response value.
• Those with an impurity component type have non-blank impurity response and impurity
response value.
54810
Because of a known issue with the Amyuni PDF converter on Citrix systems, when the Save
report image (as PDF) after Sign Off system policy was enabled and you signed off on reports
in rapid succession (30 seconds or less), sometimes the wrong PDF report was stored in the
database. Now, Empower software uses a new tool to handle PDF conversion, and the correct
PDF is stored in the database when you sign off on reports quickly.
54838
Previously, you could not select, modify, or save the Bath Grouping settings from the
Dissolution Summary Table tab on the Dissolution Table Properties dialog box. Additionally,
when you were attempting to save the Bath Grouping settings, the Empower software would
display an error message. Now, you can select, modify, and save the Bath Grouping settings
on the Dissolution Summary Table tab correctly.
54966
Previously, when using ApexTrack integration, there were rare instances where one of the
tangent lines used to calculate the width@tangent field was drawn incorrectly, resulting in a
larger width@tangent value and an unexpected USP Resolution value. Now, the tangent lines
are drawn correctly.
54979
Previously, the descriptions for using Unnamed peak named by RRT calculations with Default
Peak were incorrect in the Online help. Now, the descriptions have been expanded to clarify how
the Unnamed peak named by RRT calculations work when used with Default Peak.
54988
Previously, when using a Chinese Empower version and attempting to Sign off 2 after
completing Sign off 1, an error message appeared indicating that the result ID failed because
Sign off 1 was not performed. Now, the software registers that Sign off 1 was performed and
allows you to perform Sign off 2 without an error message appearing.
Note: This defect was also fixed in Empower 3 FR3 Hotfix 1 under PCS 54973.
55033
Previously, when you selected and deleted multiple peaks in the Peaks table in Review, the area
of a deleted tangent or exponential skimmed peak did not always add to its parent peak's area
when these conditions coincided:
• The skimmed peak was included in the list of peaks to be deleted.
Now, whenever you delete tangent or exponential skimmed peaks, the area of the deleted
skimmed peak is correctly added to the parent peak's area.
Note: This defect was also fixed in Empower 3 FR3 Hotfix 1 under PCS 54843.
55064
Previously, the Waters Database Manager would not function properly on an Empower Enterprise
database server when the Empower client application was installed on the same drive as the
Empower Oracle database. Now, this no longer occurs.
Note: This defect was also fixed in Empower 3 FR3 Hotfix 1 under PCS 55032 and 55058.
55153
Previously, when an ACQUITY FTN autosampler used auto additions with the Look Ahead
feature, the Preparing for Injection action failed on the last injection in a series of consecutive
injections. Now, this no longer occurs.
55387
Previously, results were not created from channels whose stored Scale to uV value was zero.
Now, when a channel of data is processed, if the stored Scale to uV value is zero, a Scale to uV
value of 1 will be used for processing. This change allows the channel of data to be processed
into a Result.
55393
Previously, some of the peak data displayed for regular derived channels was inaccurate
because Empower updated some chromatogram properties before reading or calculating data.
Now, for regular derived channels, Empower first reads and calculates the data, and then
updates the chromatogram properties. This ensures accurate results that match the results of
acquired or formula-based derived channels.
55409
Previously, when you opened multiple spectrum plot windows of PDA data, and then adjusted the
chromatogram wavelength, an MFC error appeared and the system exited unexpectedly. Now,
the MFC error no longer appears and the system no longer exits unexpectedly.
55425
Previously, when you ran Installation Qualification validation and the validation failed to run, the
IQ report contained verify files information from the previous time the Installation Qualification
was run. Now, when you run Installation Qualification and the validation fails to run, the IQ report
does not contain verify files information from the previous time it was run.
55484
Previously, when you were working with PDA or mass spectrometer data and you altered a
sample set and updated the Amount field, an error message appeared. If you then re-selected
the row of data in the 3D channel table, the system exited unexpectedly. Now, the system no
longer exits unexpectedly.
54994
Custom fields do not fault correctly in projects that contain custom field IDs greater than 755.
Solution: When creating a new project, manually copy custom fields between projects using the
copy functionality within the Project window after the new project is created. Do not copy custom
fields by selecting the Custom Fields check box on the New Project Wizard-Copy Selection
page.
55069
When the Sample Set is modified in the Alter Sample Editor, the changes are only saved to the
Sample Set and not to the Sample Set Method.
55204
When using an Empower 3 FR4 Personal system, if you uninstall Empower, reboot the system,
and then reinstall Empower and attempt to log in, an error message appears indicating that the
Oracle listener cannot be found. Additionally, if you have not used Empower for an extended
period of time and you attempt to log in to Empower again, you are not able to do so and the
same Oracle listener file doesn't exist error message appears.
Solution: To avoid seeing this message and to ensure that the Listener service works correctly,
stop the service and then restart it after reinstalling Empower or after Empower has been idle for
an extended period of time.
Solution: Save the first method set prior to opening a second one.
55240
The Empower Online Help is missing the following result-type processing code for formula-based
derived channel results:
P52 - Problem performing a mathematical operation between multiple 2D acquired channels. The
channels do not have the same data start, data end, or number of x points.
55247
When reporting a method set containing a formula-based derived channel that has a description
longer than the width of the page, the description of the formula-based derived channel is
truncated. However, the report method contains the full formula, Map Variables to Channels,
and Map Constants to Values information.
55271
The description for the Modify Component Times user privilege is incorrect in the Online help.
The description should read:
55277
The current description of the Configuration Manager System Policies dialog box is misleading
when translated into Chinese. The description should be written more clearly to clarify the
following:
When working in a regulated environment, Waters recommends selecting
all GXP and ER labeled options. If you are also utilizing Electronic
Signatures, select all GXP, ER, and ES labeled options.
Solution: To re-enable the Apply button, either modify the channel selection in the Map
Variables to Channels table twice in the same row, or select the channel name in a different row.
55327
When performing the equilibrate function with an Agilent 7890 GC, the instrument may fail to
equilibrate properly and remain in an initialization loop until the run is manually aborted or the
system times out.
55435
If the System Policy date format is changed, subsequent use of After this Date filtering to look at
the Result History table in the Result Audit Viewer will not show all of the relevant Result History
entries.
Solution: After changing the System Policy date format, in order to see all Result History
entries, set the After this Date field to 1/1/1899.
55443
The ICS instrument driver v1.40 for the Agilent 6850 GC is not localized completely for Asian
languages.
55444
The instrument control software for the 7890 GC is not compatible with Empower 3 Feature
Release 4 Japanese, Chinese, or Korean versions when installed on Windows 10.
55564
When a formula-based derived channel result is copied to a different project, the list of variables
in the Derived Channel IDs field is ordered differently. In the original project, the variables
appear in the order they are used in the formula. In the project the result is copied to, the
variables are alphabetized.
Solution: To ensure that the X and Y data points are imported correctly, do not import AIA data
that contains X values unless the actual data rate is constant or nearly constant.
55628
From the Results tab of the Compare window, when you modify a result table by adding columns
and clicking Save Preferences, the modified preferences are not saved.
55641
Some field names are not displayed fully in the Instrument Method Editor for the Agilent 7890 GC
ICS Driver with Empower 3 Korean.
55665
The descriptions for the PK01 and PK02 processing codes in the online Help are incorrect. The
descriptions should read as follows:
55671
In the Review window, if you are using an Apex Track processing method and create a "Missing"
peak by deleting a named peak followed by calibration or quantitation, manual integration of
peaks to the right of the "Missing" peak is no longer allowed.
Solution: Complete all manual integration tasks prior to performing calibration or quantitation.
55721
When the Review window preferences are set to automatically apply the method set and to
display the Mass Analysis window, opening Review with a Sample Set and applying a method set
that includes 3D MS processing will not always populate the Mass Analysis window.
Solution: Refreshing the window, either by reapplying the method set, selecting a different
injection, or slightly resizing the Mass Analysis window, corrects this issue.
55723
When an individual PDA result that has MS subresults is copied to a different project, the
associated MS spectra and XIC chromatograms cannot be viewed in the Mass Analysis window
or in Reporting.
Solution: Copy the Result Set to the new project and re-process the results.
55736
If you use identical custom fields in two different projects and copy a report method that uses that
custom field as a "Group By" field from one project to the other, in the new project, the custom
field might be removed from the "Group By" field in the report method.
Solution: If a custom field is needed in the "Group By" field in a report, verify that it works, and
then back up the project.
55749
When you uninstall Empower using Setup > Remove Empower from the Media, errors occur.
After closing the error messages, uninstallation completes, but the Empower log does not list any
errors.
Solution: You can view the custom field in the Peaks tab of the Project window or in a report.
55821
When installing Empower Server software and the Windows environment variable path contains
special characters, for example a parentheses (C:\Program files (x86)), the Waters
Database Manager (WDM) application does not automatically install and an error message
appears when you launch the WDM application.
Solution: Before installing Empower software on a server, ensure that the environment variable
path does not contain any special characters. If you have previously installed Empower on the
server and encountered this issue, reset the environment variable path to its original definition,
and then run the WDM installer.
Tip: To view and modify the Windows environment variable path setting, access the Advanced
tab in the Windows System Properties dialog box, click Environment Variables, and then edit
the System variable path.
3. Run the SetupWatersSMlns batch file and enter the following parameters:
Solution: If the Pencil (Edit) icon does not appear on the Backup Schedules page, adjust the
window size or zoom level.
55827
From the Review window, after applying a method set to a 3D PDA channel that creates a result
with both 3D MS sub-results and cross-channel internal standard sub-results where a cross-
channel internal standard sub-result is extracted from a 3D MS channel, when you modify the
smoothing parameters in the processing method and click Integrate, one of the 3D MS sub-
results is incorrectly assigned the channel name and description of the cross-channel internal
standard extracted from the same 3D MS channel.
Solution: After you modify the smoothing parameters in the processing method, click Apply
Method Set instead of Integrate to assign the correct channel name and description.
55833
When installing Empower over a network using Remote Desktop and the local disc drive is
shared through the Remote Desktop connection window, the installer issues an MSI error 1645
Windows Installer does not permit installation from a Remote Desktop
Connection and the installation fails.
Solution: Share the drive from the local machine by right-clicking on DVD drive > Properties >
Sharing, and then select the remote machine to access.
209726
When you perform disaster recovery procedures and restore the database using the recovery
scripts provided, the control file location specified in the Waters Database Manager application
reverts to the new server location instead of the location that was previously specified.
Solution: After disaster recovery, log on to the Waters Database Manager application, and
change the control file location on the Policy tab of the Manage Backup Settings page.
209679
In the Waters Database Manager application, the control file location specified on the Policy tab
of the Manage Backup settings page cannot contain more than 30 characters. If the path location
contains more than 30 characters, you will receive an Oracle error.
