To confirm that the application update did not affect any data, reprocess a data set before and
after you install the software, and then verify that the results are equivalent.
Run the Verify Files utility or the SystemsQT for Empower IQ, and review the resulting file for an
entry that states “No installation changes were detected.”
Anti-virus considerations
Some real-time virus scanners mistake normal data acquisition and instrument control for virus
activity, and thus interfere with proper operations. Full-system scans and live updates can be
network-intensive, disk-intensive, and CPU-intensive, and they can also interfere with normal
data acquisition. Schedule scans and updates for idle times when data acquisition does not
occur.
Certain anti-virus program features like "intrusion prevention" and "tamper protection" can also
interfere with normal operation. Disable them as well.
Empower installations
For Empower software installations, exclude the Empower installation folder (usually
C:\Empower) and its sub-folders.
Note: Support includes English, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, and Korean distributions of
Empower 3 software.
Specifically, Empower 3 Feature Release 5 supports these platforms and operating systems:

Driver compatibility
Empower 3 Feature Release 5 supports both Driver Pack 2018 Release 1 and Driver Pack 2019
Release 1 on Windows 7 and on Windows 10.
See also: For information on the Waters drivers, refer to the following documents:
• Waters Driver Pack 2018 Release 1 Release Notes (716005632)
• Waters Driver Pack 2018 Release 1 Installation and Configuration Guide (715005659)
• Waters Driver Pack 2019 Release 1 Installation and Configuration Guide (715006151)
Requirement: Waters Driver Pack 2018 Release 1 does not natively support the Single
Quadrupole Detector 2 (SQD2) on Windows 10. In order to support the SQD2 on Windows 10,
you must upgrade the SQD2 driver to the latest version of the software, which is available on the
SQD2 Instrument Component Software (ICS) media (667005694). The SQD2 ICS media is
available as part of the Empower ICS software kit included with the SQD2 system for supporting
the SQD2 on Empower.
• The NuGenesis LMS base kit (SDMS) requires either the NuGenesis LMS 8 SR2 SDMS Win
10 client and Data Adapters Release 3 Hotfix 2, or NuGenesis LMS 9.0 SDMS, which applies
to Windows 10 client machines.
• The NuGenesis LMS Option kit (ELN and Connectors) requires either NG LMS 9.0, NG LMS
Empower Interface 2.0, or NG LMS Connectors 2.0, which are compatible with Windows 10.
See also: The NuGenesis LMS (NuGenesis 8 Service Release 2) SDMS Win 10 Client Release
Notes (716004881), the NuGenesis LMS (NuGenesis 8 SR 2) Hotfix 6 Release Notes
(716005620), and the NuGenesis LMS 9.0 Release Notes (715005980) for complete information.
Note: The NuGenesis SDMS Win 10 Client supports both Windows 10 and Windows 7.
However, when using Empower 3 Feature Release 5, SDMS users require the NuGenesis SDMS
Win 10 Client on Windows 10.
• NuGenesis LMS Option kit (ELN and Connectors) for the following component versions: NG
LMS 8 SR2 HF6, NG LMS 8 Empower Interface 1.1. HF2, and NG LMS 8 Connectors 1.1
HF1. This is because Empower 3 Feature Release 5 does not support Windows 7.

need to upgrade to a supported platform or install a newer version of Empower
software.
Requirement: When you install WDC 2.1 or WDC 2.1 HF2 on Windows 10, you must run both
the installer and the installation qualification Check.bat file using an account with System
Administrator role.
Deployment notes
Recommendation: Perform a system object export before you install the Empower 3 Feature
Release 5 software.
Requirement: If you choose to perform a system object export from older versions of Empower
for use with Empower 3 FR5, you must use the System Object Export Utility supplied with the
Empower 3 FR5 media and not the utility supplied with previous versions of Empower. The utility
supplied with older Empower versions is not compatible with an Empower 3 FR5 installation. After
you have successfully performed a system object export, then during the installation, you can
perform a system object import of the objects to bring them into your Empower 3 Feature Release
5 installation.
See also: The Empower 3 Feature Release 5 Installation, Configuration, and Upgrade Guide
(715006184) for complete installation instructions and details about system object export and
import.
Installation changes
The following installation changes take effect with Empower 3 Feature Release 5.
• SmartBear TestExecute software is no longer installed with Empower software during the
Empower 3 Feature Release 5 installation. This software is no longer supported.
Empower 3 FR5 now encrypts SQLNET traffic to and from the Empower database.
With TLS, authenticating the Active Directory information requires you to generate a Certification
Authority (CA) certificate on the LDAP server and import it on the Empower Server, Clients, and
LAC/E modules.
Tip: Adding the computer to the LDAP domain before you install the Empower Server no longer
requires you to import the CA certificate.
2. In the Ethernet Status window, clear Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) and select
Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).
3. In the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) Properties window, clear Use the following
DNS server addresses, and then click Advanced.
4. In the Advanced TCP/IP settings window, DNS tab, add the LDAP domain DNS IPs, and
then click OK.
5. Select Append these DNS suffixes (in order), add and drag the LDAP domain to the top
of the list, and then save the changes.
Note: When you configure Empower to authenticate with LDAP over TLS, in the
Authentication dialog box select the Use TLS/SSL check box and use the hostname, not
the IP, to specify the Directory Server Hostnames.
2. In the System Properties window, click Computer Name tab, and then click Change.
3. In the Computer Name/Domain Changes window, select Domain, insert the domain name,
and then click OK.
3. In the Add/Remove Snap-in window, select Certificates, and then click Add >.
4. In the Certificates Snap-in window, select Computer account, and then click Next.
5. In the Select Computer window, select Local Computer: (the computer this console is
running on), and then click Finish.
7. In the Console window, Console Root tree, expand Certificates > Trusted Root
Certification Authorities, and then click Certificates.
8. In the list of certificates on the right, right-click the certificate, and then select All Tasks >
Export.
9. In the Certificate Export Wizard window, click Next.
10. On the Export File Format page, select Base-64 encoded X.509 (.CER), and then click
Next.
11. On the File to Export page, specify a name for the certificate or browse for an existing one
to overwrite.
Result: The system exports the CA Certificate to the current user directory.
Certification Authorities, right-click Certificates, and then select All Tasks > Import.
10. On the Certificate Import page, select Place all certificates in the following store,
browse Trusted Root Certification Authorities, and then click Next.
After-injection recovery is performed by each system independently. Multiple systems can attempt
recovery at the same time. This type of concurrent recovery occasionally causes the Instrument
Server application to stop responding. When this happens, any pending injections are lost. A
Connection to Chromatography System Lost message appears in the Message Center
and also as a pop-up message. Any buffered data is recovered after restarting Empower.
Recommendation: Disable after-injection recovery only when you experience this failure while
recovering buffered data.
• Any sample set can be recovered once it completes, even if other sample sets are still
acquiring data.
• You cannot access a system's buffered data until that system recovers.
Note: For the installation and uninstallation details and procedures, see chapter "Administrative
(push) installation instructions" in the Empower 3 Feature Release 5 Installation, Configuration,
and Upgrade Guide (715006184).
Windows Server 2016 Standard can now host Empower databases and Citrix servers.
Configuration changes
Empower 3 FR5 no longer supports these configurations:
Numeric differences
When you use Empower 3 Feature Release 5 software, some numbers may display differently
than in previous versions of Empower. These number display changes may appear in Empower 3
Feature Release 5 regardless of the Empower version in which the values were calculated. The
slight differences are due to the software compiler used with Empower 3 Feature Release 5.
Empower 3 Feature Release 5 software is compiled using an updated compiler within Microsoft’s
current development tool suite. The updated compiler formats floating point numbers for display
with greater accuracy than the previous compiler. The updated compiler affects only how
Empower 3 Feature Release 5 software formats floating point numbers for display. It does not
affect numeric calculations. Additionally, Empower 3 Feature Release 5 displays floating point
numbers in scientific notation with a 3-digit exponent instead of a 2-digit exponent.
When testing Empower 3 Feature Release 5, out of the thousands of numbers tested, only four
numbers differed from previous versions of Empower. All four of the differences occurred at the
15th significant figure. For each of these four numbers, the last displayed digit was rounded up or
down by one.
• Your selection also included manually integrated tangent or exponential skimmed peaks.
• The skimmed peak was not the last peak you selected for deletion.
Instead, Empower randomly deleted the wrong peaks from the Peaks table for every peak you
selected after selecting a skimmed peak.
Now, Empower correctly deletes peak selections that include manually integrated tangent or
exponential skimmed peaks and the Peaks table updates accordingly.
PCS 56663
Starting with Empower 3 Service Release 3 (SR3), Review unexpectedly stopped when
performing some activities that caused the screen to update such as navigating between
injections or updating tables. This problem occurred when the screen update coincided with the
Message Center indicator button refresh. This indicator alerts users to new messages in the
Message Center and automatically refreshes every 30 seconds.
To resolve this issue, the notification mechanism was removed. As a result, the Message Center
icon in Review (and other applications) no longer changes to red and the Message Center tool tip
no longer displays the number of unread error messages. Review no longer stops unexpectedly
while rapidly switching between injections in Review.
Note: The Message Center continues to function and new messages continue to be populated in
the Message Center, as expected. Users can click the Message Center icon to initiate a refresh
and display the latest messages.
Now, using a keyboard shortcut in the Configuration Manager has no effect. The software
behaves as expected when using a keyboard shortcut after you created or edited a view filter.
• On Windows 7 systems: The application stopped working and an error message appeared.
No result sets were created.
• On Windows 10 systems: The system created the result sets, but an error occurred when
opening the results.
Now, background processing completes successfully when creating results that contain
subresults.
• If an injection was being acquired while the sample set was transitioning into buffering mode,
and if that injection is then processed or viewed in Review or Preview before buffering
recovery is complete, the Channel Status may be incorrect (CRI-269).
• During acquisition, an incomplete channel was set to Acquisition Finished. This caused the
data file to be unreadable. This is now fixed so that the channel status matches the correct
post-acquisition outcome. Users can now view and complete the raw data file in Review
(CRI-452).
For each situation above, these incorrect statuses are now updated properly post-acquisition
when Empower reads the channels for display or processing. For descriptions of the field values,
see the "Status of injections and channels" topic or the "Interpreting injection and channel status
combinations" topic in the Empower online Information System.
Citrix Receiver
Citrix users who run Empower on Windows 10 "October 2018 Update" (v1809) experience a
limitation when they attempt to launch a published desktop in full-screen mode.
You can find the detailed description and solutions in "Issue 1" in the following Citrix support
article: CTX234973.
INFEMP-2298
If you close the remote desktop connection while installing Empower on a server, the Empower
Deployment Manager stops working.
Solution: Do not close the remote desktop connection before the Empower Deployment
Manager completes the installation process.
Solution: Disabling after-injection recovery helps avoid this failure during recovery of buffered
data. The failure can also occur during normal data acquisition, when buffering is not occurring. In
this case, disabling after-injection recovery has no effect.
• You cannot access a system's buffered data until that system recovers.
INFEMP-2566
When Empower software is installed on a Japanese or Chinese Windows Server 2016 and
Windows Update KB4487006 is applied, the Configuration Manager window closes unexpectedly.
To resolve this issue, apply Windows Update KB4489882.
INFEMP-2859 (CRI-266)
A sampleset that has recovered from buffering sometimes displays an Injection Status of
Incomplete, while the Channel Status displays Acquisition Finished. The software now makes
multiple attempts to update the status, which lowers the occurrence of this issue.
INFEMP-3568
If you modify or schedule a database backup in Waters Database Manager and select the Use
RMAN setting for the Compression Algorithm, the database backup fails. To correct this issue,
choose another compression algorithm such as Medium, the recommended setting.
INFEMP-3570
When you specify a custom SID during an Empower server installation, you must edit the
NOTIFICATION_APP_LINK in Waters Database Manager to contain a SID consisting of either full
uppercase or full lowercase letters after software installation.
INFEMP-3571
When you back up raw data to a network share, both the Windows oraclejobs user account and
the Guest user account must have write access to this location; otherwise, the backup fails. You
must enable the Guest user account in both the source and the target backup location.
Solution: Configure the network share to give the Everyone group read/write permissions and
enable the Guest account status. To enable the Guest account status, navigate to Local
Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings >
Security Options, select Accounts: Guest account status, and then select Enabled in the
Accounts: Guest user status Properties dialog box.
INFEMP-3572
When viewing Waters Database Manager in Chrome with the browser window too narrow, some
of the text in WDM is truncated.
INFEMP-3574
If the Windows oraclejobs user password does not match the OS Job password, a scheduled
database backup fails to run in the Waters Database Manager application.
Solution: Ensure that the Windows oraclejobs password and the WDM OS Job password
match.
INFEMP-3575
You cannot change the Oracle Sys Password in the Waters Database Manager application.
