Choose at least one goal from the list of sustainability goals. Analyze how the information is

presented on the website in about a paragraph.

The United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of "No Poverty" aims to end

poverty in all its forms everywhere. The goal is based on the belief that poverty is not just a lack

of income, but also a lack of access to basic necessities such as food, shelter, and healthcare. The

website provides detailed information on the various dimensions of poverty and how they can be

addressed, ensuring that users can not learn about the issue, but also take action on it. It gives the

reader a sense of accomplishment. For example, the website includes information on income

poverty and how it can be reduced through economic growth and development. It also includes

information on how access to education and employment opportunities can help individuals lift

themselves out of poverty and improve their overall quality of life. The website includes data and

statistics on poverty levels around the world, as well as success stories and case studies of

initiatives that have been successful in reducing poverty in specific communities. Indeed, there is

a case study about the Covid-19 response and how women leaders held a key role in this process:

this can help readers better understand the issue from a different lens. Moreover, consider the

usage of infographics and other visual representations which clearly and effectively illustrate the

extent of poverty around the world and the progress that is being made towards ending it. These

infographics use color, placement, and images in creative and engaging ways to help convey

complex information in a simple and accessible way. For instance, there are side images of poor

children, living in poor household conditions in less developed countries, which automatically

lets the reader develop a sense of emotional connection with the issue of poverty.

Read through the web-page. Analyze elements of the web-page in about two paragraphs.

Different elements, such as charts, graphs, and images, are carefully positioned to guide

the UN website's goal of promoting peace and security through international diplomacy.

Different colors are used to highlight different aspects of the data, such as the prevalence of

poverty in different regions or the impact of specific interventions. The careful use of color helps

to draw the viewer's attention to the most important points and makes the information more

visually appealing. The layout of the UN website is organized and easy to navigate, with clear

headings and sections that allow the reader to easily find the information they are looking for.

This organization helps to establish the UN's logos by presenting information in a clear and

orderly manner. Indeed, consider the use of whitespace and other design elements (such as

separation in two parts) towards the top of the page: there is symmetrical separation between

“Security Council” and “General Assembly.” This ensures that there is both similarity and

contrast within these two ideals- the UN is trying to say that they are the ones who can achieve

this delicate balance. The placements and color helps to create a clear and uncluttered layout,

which makes it easier for the viewer to process the information (and be persuaded that the United

Nations goals are right and that they should support the UN’s efforts towards peace).

Moreover, consider the usage of videos and tables. These videos can be effective in

engaging the reader and helping to convey complex ideas in a more accessible and visually

appealing way. By using videos, the UN website appeals to the reader's pathos by presenting

information in a way that is visually engaging and emotionally impactful. There is a certain

video linked in the webpage: Under the Blue Helmet; Life as a UN Peacekeeper. This video
essentially takes the reader through a “day in the life” of a UN peacekeeper, further connecting

the UN with an emotional appeal to the reader. Tables have a similar effect: they convey a sense

of logic and reason, giving the reader the idea that the UN has a well thought out plan for this

peace and diplomacy ideal, comprehensive with all needed ideals in a clear and organized

manner. By presenting data in a clear and easy-to-understand format, the UN website can appeal

to the reader's logos and help to establish its credibility as a source of reliable information on

international peace and security. If the data and numbers of the table say that the UN has made

progress towards the goal of maintaining international peace and security, then how can they

argue or disagree with that? It is much harder to argue with solid numbers, and the Un exploits

this in their website.

Read through the charter and choose at least one element to analyze in about a paragraph.

Article 36 of the Statute of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) outlines the court's

jurisdiction, the types of cases that it is authorized to hear. According to Article 36, the ICJ has

jurisdiction over all cases referred to it by the parties involved and all matters specifically

provided for in the United Nations Charter or in other treaties and conventions that are currently

in force. This means that if two countries have a dispute and agree to bring it to the ICJ for a

ruling, the court will have the authority to hear the case. Additionally, Article 36 makes it so

states parties to the Statute are obliged to accept the ICJ's decisions in these certain legal disputes

without any choice to “opt out.” These legal disputes include cases of disputes over the

interpretation of a treaty, questions of international law, and breaches of international

obligations. The significance of Article 36 is its ability to provide a peaceful and legally binding
means of resolving disputes between countries. Rather than resorting to military action or other

means of conflict resolution, countries can bring their disputes to the ICJ and accept the court's

ruling as final. This helps to maintain international peace and stability by providing a forum for

resolving disputes in a legal and orderly manner. I have long thought about the concept of courts

and justice as a very key part of our society and for healthy relations with democracy, and it is

very interesting to hear and study that even the United Nations has a court.

Analyze the structure of this web page. Then, choose one of the 12 commitments and write

about how it could link to other texts we've studied in class.

The UN's "Our Common Agenda" report website is a well-organized and user-friendly

resource for learning about the organization's proposals for addressing global challenges. The

website is divided into clear partitions, including an introduction, key proposals, and the option

to download "Our Common Agenda" in full. This makes it easy for readers to quickly find the

information they are looking for and to understand the structure of the report. One of the

standout features of the website is the use of transitions and moving infographics. As readers

scroll through the site, they are met with dynamic graphics that help to illustrate the key points

being made. These infographics are not only visually appealing, but they also help to keep the

reader engaged and to better understand the complex issues being discussed. This usage of

dynamic infographics is unique to this United Nations webpage: none of the other pages had any

such usage of moving infographics, which help the reader better retain and understand the

information.
The UN's "Our Common Agenda" key proposal commitment 2 on protecting the planet is

closely aligned with the themes and messages of Rachel Carson's Silent Spring. In her book,

Carson argued that human activities were causing significant harm to the natural world and

called for greater awareness and action to address these issues. One of the key elements of this

commitment is the commitment to the 1.5-degree Celsius goal and net zero emissions by 2050 or

sooner. This aligns with Carson's call for humanity to take urgent action to reduce its impact on

the environment and to preserve the delicate balance of the natural world. Indeed, Carson

emphasizes this sense of urgency and how we had to act if we did not want utter calamity. This

commitment also has a similar tone of urgency. Other elements of the commitment, such as

declarations of climate emergency and the right to a healthy environment, also reflect Carson's

emphasis on the importance of protecting the natural world and the human right to a clean and

healthy environment. Carson’s major principles are, more or less, reflected in this commitment.

Carson called for change, against DDT, and the utilization of new methods less harmful for the

environment. This commitment is similar in that is also emphasizes change, just as strongly as it

emphasizes urgency.
