Life and Work of Rizal
These are the questions you need to answer after the report :
Part I: Explain your personal preference regarding the realization of the
Philippines’ progress, will it be under Spain with reforms or total independence
from control?
My personal preference regarding the realization of the Philippines’ progress is
total independence from control. Filipinos really suffered from the colonization of Spain.
A lot of experience toleration of violence from Spaniards. They were seen as savages
that needed to be controlled and civilized, and so Filipinos were forced to adopt the
beliefs and values of their colonizers at the expense of their own dignity. The Philippines
under Spanish occupation could be described as when Catholic doctrine and
Christianity were introduced to the islands. Although many Filipinos converted to
Catholicism, they maintained a lot of their traditional beliefs that espoused a view in a
spiritual life after this life. This is because Catholicism ended up being more of a long-
running colonial apparatus instead of an ideology for freedom from colonisation.
However, despite the oppression from occupying forces, there were also many Filipinos
who took advantage of these new opportunities by becoming traders or educators
themselves. So an essential social stratum was established, which benefited all social
classes by introducing them through education to various progressive influences from
Europe, including science and technology. Filipinos held only minor offices. They were
not given the benefits of public education and their rights and wishes were almost
completely ignored. Such laws as did exist for their protection were not enforced. On the
other hand benefits of Spanish rule should; however, be acknowledged. Spain brought
its language, its literature, its laws, and its religion to a Far Eastern country. Many of the
clergy tried to help the people in their social and economic development. They taught
many children to read and write in the local dialects, the better to teach them the
Christian religion. They introduced new crops, such as corn and cacao, and improved
sugar and coffee production. They taught many trades, including printing Manila had
printing presses before the end of the sixteenth century. One of Spain’s greatest
contributions to the development of the country was the one it least wanted the
unification of the people under its control. The Filipinos were united, first of all, through a
common religion. But, more important, they were united by a common hatred of the
Spanish conqueror and all he stood for. So despite of all the good they had done, even
the Spanish religious orders began to assume an excessive control over the people’s
lives. This alienated many Filipinos and brought the church orders into sharp conflict
with Spanish officials who resented their growing political power. Some of the church
lands remain to this day as centers of social unrest. Philippines really deserve to have
freedom considering all the torture and violence they experience in the hand of
Spaniards even they bring us a development in our country is not enough to control,
dictate and suffered from them.
Part II: Considering the present political and economic situation of the country,
how do you visualize the Philippines a decade from now?
To be frank, the world in general is heading towards a better future, economy-
wise. Ecology-wise, on the other hand, the world needs to pull together to address
serious environmental issues.

The same also applies to the Philippines. Although, as a third-world country, any
sustained improvement in the economy would likely translate to better living conditions
to Filipinos. Like most Asians, Filipinos are tech savvy and are some of the people who
spend extended periods of time on the internet. This presents two possibilities:
improved access to both information and disinformation. If we learn to be more
discriminating in what we read and watch online, then Filipinos can become quite
educated. Coupled with our good grasp of the English language, we can become a
global hub for communications. A growing, more educated and skilled population also
means better job opportunities and bigger domestic markets for industries like food and
beverage, agriculture, real estate, manufacturing. In terms of economic development, a
healthy strategy of targeting low hanging fruits like tourism, and long term goals of
knowledge industries can yield fantastic results. Tourism provides a good incentive to
preserve and promote natural and cultural resources since they would attract foreign
visitors bringing in dollars and helping expand local industries and creating service
oriented jobs. A mix of skills-oriented education and Industry of education can also help
the quality of employees and make the Philippines a contended in the global economy
in terms of workforce contribution.

Overall, the prospects for the Philippines is very bright, provided the government
and other sectors stay true to the tenets of democratic form of governance. Many
Filipinos were not around yet when the country was under dictatorship and massive and
well-funded misinformation campaigns and revisionist ideas are misleading the younger
generations and giving them the idea that a mail-fisted approach is necessary. In reality,
we have all the mechanisms in place to become a progressive country. All we need to
do is make sure that the people in government behind the wheel are held accountable.
Better yet, we have to choose the right leaders

Part III: Which is better and beneficial: a government that governs in a country or
a government that governs from outside the country?
A government that governs in a country is more better and beneficial because it
is on the ground, because it has eyes and ears, and because it directly observes what it
rules and administers. And it may even dispense with the press (if it can). And the
government that governs from afar absolutely requires that the truth and the facts reach
its knowledge by every possible channel, so that it may weigh and estimate them better,
and this need increases when a country like the Philippines is concerned, where the
inhabitants speak and complain in a language unknown to the authorities. To govern in
any other way may also be called governing, but it is to govern badly. It amounts to
pronouncing judgment after hearing only one of the parties; it is steering a ship without
reckoning its conditions, the state of the sea, the reefs and shoals, the direction of the
winds and currents. It is managing a house by endeavouring merely to give it polish and
a fine appearance without watching the money-chest, without looking after the servants
and the members of the family. Governments in a country provide the parameters for
everyday behavior for citizens, protect them from outside interference, and often provide
for their well-being happiness. In last few centuries, some economists and thinkers have
advocated government control over some aspects of the economy.
Part IV: Do you agree or disagree with the way Rizal’s prognostication of the
future of the Philippines?
I agree with Rizal prognostication of the future of the Philippines. A century after
his death, Rizal offered a variety of or prophecies about the Philippines. In his
foresighted essay, The Philippines A Century Hence, published in 1889, as well as in
his letter he wrote for his leg counsel on December 14,1896, he made the following
predictions.
First is the "The Filipinos will become independent as it cannot stay in an abusive
relationship with Spain. In today's world, practically all of the country is free of
colonization, and we are now free and independent. True to Rizal's prediction, the
Filipinos gained independence, however there were some variations in who's country
would prevail over them in their search for independence. Rizal predicted that we will be
free of Spain in this portion, however the country was never free of Spain since the
Americans colonized the Philippines after Spain's colonization However, the Americans
are not as rigorous as the Spaniards. Then, after the Americans had colonized us, the
Japanese arrived and took their place in the American colonization of the Philippines.
After that, the Philippines gained independence during World War II. Rizal may not have
predicted that the Philippines would be ruled by other countries after Spain, but he has
faith in Filipinos and believes that they will regain their independence. I believe that it
occurred and that Rizal believes that these incidents may occur because he believes in
Filipinos. Rizal believes that the method he protects and fights for his nation is an
inherent attribute of Filipinos, and that every Filipino possesses this traits. Filipinos are
tired of being controlled by other countries in their own country, therefore even a small
step forward is a major step forward, and here we are today, celebrating Philippine
Independence Day every July 4th.
Second is the "The Filipinos will be still under Spain but with conditions far better
than what they had in the past." Unlike Rizal's first prediction, this prediction did not
come true because the Philippines were in poor condition in Spain even before the
Americans arrived The Spanish- American War was one of the reasons why it did not
happen. The war between the two countries originated from Spain's desire for
possession of the Philippines and the United States' desire for Asian commercial
opportunities. The Americans won which is one of the reasons why the Spaniards didn't
take long to settle in the Philippines and had a strained relationship with the Filipinos
Also, I believe that one of the reasons is that the Spaniards cannot be modest to the
Filipinos because they had far more power than the small countries, which they
colonized and claimed as their own.
Third “Japan might crush the Philippines but it shall find Korea more attractive
due to proximity and munt also keep an eye on Russia on its north.” This prediction of
Rizal did happened. Aside from the fact that Korea is more attractive due to its
proximity, it also possess a good source of iron and coal. As a result, they are becoming
an industrialized country, which necessitates the requirement for the aforementioned
resources. In addition, Rizal’s forecast regarding Japan maintaining a close eye on
Korea’s north was proven correct. The northern part of Korea formed an alliance with
the Russians, resulting in their separation into two countries. As a result, the reason
could be due to a disparity in principles, strategy, and avarice on the seat of power.
Part of the vision that Jose Rizal had of a new Philippine Republic was: “Very
probably the Philippines will defend with indescribably ardor the liberty she has bought
at the cost of so much blood and sacrifice. With the new men that will spring from her
bosom and the remembrance of the past, she will perhaps enter openly the wide road of
progress and all will work jointly to strengthen the mother country at home as well as
abroad…” Knowing how Rizal and his compatriots fought in Spain for the idea of the
Philippines, his inclusion of Filipinos across the globe is well-understood. With regards
to the 10% of our population now abiding internationally, it is prescient. Rizal believed
that Filipinos at home and abroad had to work together to make that most glorious of
ideas, the Philippines, a reality.
