The best curriculum is not the one that is based on a static body of knowledge but one which

teaches students to cope with change. Discuss the statement and give your opinion.

Given the importance of education, it stands to reason that many are striving to maximize its

efficiency in equipping students with knowledge. As such, it has been suggested that the school

curriculum should not fixate on a set of knowledge, but rather cultivate an effective response to

change in students. In this essay, I will be discussing this issue at length.

First, a rigid repository of knowledge fails to reflect the ever-changing world. Humanity is

always pushing the frontiers of various subjects, which necessitates that facts and figures

constantly be revised and updated to provide a true account of the contemporary world. Consequently,

should the school syllabus be left unmodified, students run the risk of learning outdated and

inaccurate information, which in turn distorts the educational basis that they would use to further

learn. Additionally, in view of this mismatch, students will be hard-pressed to apply what they have

learned into reality, effectively rendering it useless. Therefore, failing to see the usefulness of school,

they gradually form an apathetic or dissatisfied outlook towards it, ultimately losing the passion for

acquiring new knowledge. In essence, a fixed set of information will only prove to be archaic and

impractical over time.

On the other hand, by communicating the essence of change, school reinforces an adaptive

mindset. Those who are encouraged to keep themselves up to date and catch up with new happenings

in the intellectual sphere are more likely to obtain a more comprehensive, and correspondingly practical,

body of knowledge. This instills not only an ability to remain quick on the uptake, but also an open way of

thinking that is less resistant to change. As a result, armed with this mentality, the individual will be better

equipped to react to the volatile workforce. Always ready to receive and process new information in

real time, they will invariably be a great asset for any work organization, as opposed to those who

adhere to obsolete knowledge and are unwilling to refresh their understanding. In brevity, students who

are taught to adapt to change will not only be more intellectually acute or open-minded, but also fare

better in the workforce.

To reiterate, it is a sensible approach to change, rather than rigid theory, that should be

prioritized in forming a curriculum. Personally, I am in total concurrence with this statement, as it is

indisputable that our rapidly progressing world is now demanding more flexibility than ever. Therefore, it
is up to educators to incorporate this aspect into the classroom so as to aid students in becoming

capable individuals.
