BENG 2143 - Engineering Statistics

Semester 1 2022/2023
Tutorial 5A (Chapter 3)
Lecturer: Mohd Shahrizan bin Othman

1. Some of the statements below refer to the null hypothesis, some to the alternative
hypothesis. State the null, H0 and the alternative hypothesis, H1 , in terms of the
appropriate parameter (µ or p):

(a) The mean number of years Malaysian works before retiring is 35.
(b) The mean starting salary for Malaysia graduates is at least RM2,500 per month.
(c) 45% of UTeM students visit the library each month.
(d) About half of Malaysians prefer to live away from cities, given the choice.
(e) The chance of developing lung cancer is under 11% for men.

2. Write the null and alternative hypothesis for each of the following. Determine if each
is a case of two-tailed, a left-tailed or a right-tailed test.

(a) To test if the mean GPA for all UTeM students is more than 2.85.
(b) To check whether on average, students spend less than 2 weeks to complete their
assignment.
(c) To test if on average, a computer technician needs 3 hours to identify a computer
problem.

3. It is known that on average, a computer technician needs at least 3.2 hours to solve a
problem on troubleshooting. A random sample of 30 computers whit this problem is
taken and it is found that the technician needs an average of 2.8 hours and a standard
deviation of 0.14 hours to solve the problem. What can you conclude? (Test at
α = 0.01).

4. An engineer of an auto mobile company wants to check if it is true that the mean
time to stop (when brake is pushed) a vehicle with ABS will take exactly 24.5 seconds
during heavy rain. A random sample of 40 cars has been tested and gives a mean of
26.2 seconds and standard deviation of 2.3 seconds to stop. Can you help the engineer
to make a conclusion? (Use α = 0.03).

5. A waterworks officer insists that the average daily household water use in a certain
county is at least 400 gallons on average. To check this claim, a random sample of
25 households was checked. The average of those samples was 380 with a standard
deviation of 6.2. Is this consistent with the officer’s claim? Test at 2.5% significance
level.
6. A random sample of 64 bags of white cheddar popcorn weighed, on average, 5.43 ounces
with a standard deviation of 0.24 ounces. Test the hypothesis that µ = 5.5ounces
against the alternative hypothesis, µ < 5.5ounces, at the 0.05 level of significance.

7. Most water-treatment facilities monitor the quality of their drinking water on an hourly
basic. One variable monitored is pH below 7.0 is acidic, one above 7.0 is alkaline, and
the pH of 7.0 is natural. One water-treatment plant has a target pH 8.5 to maintain
a slightly alkali level. A random 17 water samples at a plant are tested, the mean of
one hour’s test result was 8.42 with standard deviation 0.16. Does this sample provide
sufficient evidence that the mean pH level in the water differs from 8.5? Use α = 0.05.

8. Test the hypothesis that the average content of containers of a particular lubricant is
10 litres if the contents of a random sample of 10 containers (in litres)are:

10.2 9.7 10.1 10.3 10.1 9.8 9.9 10.4 10.3 9.8

Use a 0.01 level of significance and assume that the distribution of contents is normal.

9. Based on experience, the average weight of fish caught by En. Maliq is 3.9 kg. But he
claims that the average will be higher if he fished at Farrell fishing centre. Based on
the data given, do you think that En. Maliq’s claim is true? (Test at α = 0.05).

5.6 4.2 4.5 4.7 4.4 5.3 3.7 3.1 4.8 3.4
