TUTORIAL 5

1. The flour mill produces flour in small bags before distributing them to
wholesaler and the producer expect the weight of the flour is at least 9 kg with
a standard deviation of 0.5kg. A random sample of 50 bags was taken and
found that the average weight is 7.8kg. State the hypothesis.

2. It is claimed that a car is driven on the average more than 20,000km per year.
To test this claim, a random sample of 30 car owner has been selected. The
owners were asked to keep record of the kilometres they travel. Would you
agree with this claim if the random sample showed an average of 22 500km
and a standard deviation of 5500km. State the hypothesis of interest.

3. Most of the information technology developers claim that the wireless

connection would give a speed of at least 11Mbps compared to wired
connection. A sample of 105 computers wires connection shows an average of
11.7Mbps and a standard deviation of 2.3Mbps. Do you think that wireless
usage should be implemented? (test at 5% level of significance)

4. A jack is usually used for raising the axle of a motor vehicle so that a wheel
may be changed. It is known that the weight of vehicle that can be raised by a
jack is more than 100kg. A random sample of 125 jacks with a mean of 102.2
kg and standard deviation of 15.17kg is taken. Do you agree a jack can raise
more than 100kg vehicle? (use 1% level of significance)

5. In a normal situation, on average a song needs a duration of at most 3.5

minutes to be played. The duration of a random sample of 10 songs is taken
and the data is as follows:

5.32 6.53 4.52 3.20 3.39 4.00 4.10 3.15 3.47 4.01

By using the data, do you agree with the statement that a song needs a duration
of at most 3.5 minutes to be played at 5% level of significance.

6. A researcher needs on average, 1.2 years to complete his short – term research.
A random sample of 12 researchers are taken, and the duration ( in years) to
complete their research is recorded below:

0.6 4.3 1.0 1.5 1.6 1.2 0.8 2.1 2.4 0.7 1.3 0.4
Do these data provide sufficient evidence to support the statement that a
researcher needs exactly 1.2 years to complete the research.

7. A certain calculator has been designed so that the true average lifetime is at
least 2 years. A random sample of 18 calculator is selected and it gives a mean
lifetime of 1.84 years. If it can be presumed form experience that the standard
deviation is 0.17 years, can you conclude that the average lifetime is at least 2
years? Test at 5% level of significance.

8. The exam department of college claims that 55% of their graduates have
graduated with CGPA less than 3.00. A random sample of 437 fresh graduates
shows that 154 of them graduated with CGPA less than 3.00. By using 5%
level of significance, do you agree with the claim?

9. A certain spa manager claims that his weight reducing program is able to
reduce weights on average by 15 kilograms per person. The spa records
showed that the average standard deviation for the weight loss is 5 kilograms.
For a sample of 64 women taken from those enrolled in his weight-reducing
program, the sample mean weight loss is 16 kilograms. With 1% level of
significance, is there any sufficient evidence to indicate that the claim by the
manager is correct?
