INTRODUCTION

Ruins of Vikramashila Mahavihara

Vikramashila was one of the three most important Buddhist
monasteries in India during the Pala Empire, along with
Nalanda and Odantapuri. Its location is now the site of Antichak
village, Bhagalpur district in Bihar.
Vikramashila was established by the Pala emperor Dharmapala
(783 to 820 AD) in response to a supposed decline in the
quality of scholarship at Nalanda. Atiśa, the renowned pandita
and philosopher, is listed as a notable abbot. It was destroyed
by the forces of Muhammad bin Bakhtiyar Khalji around 1193.
Its current status is that, it is visited by only local tourists from
neighbour districts. Inflow of domestic tourist is very less, due
to the lack of knowledge, awareness and comfort facilities.
There has been inflow of western tourist as well, during their
river cruises on the Ganga River.
The aim of my study is to compare this destination with
Nalanda and to give some points to make it one of the main
destinations in Bihar
The ruins of Nalanda Mahavihara

Nalanda was a renowned Buddhist monastic university in

ancient Magadha (modern-day Bihar), India. Considered by
historians to be the world's very first residential university, and
among the greatest centres of learning in the ancient world, it
was located near the city of Rajgir and about 90 kilometres
southeast of Pataliputra (Patna), operating from 427 to 1197
CE.
Nalanda was established during the Gupta Empire era, and
was supported by numerous Indian and Javanese patrons –
both Buddhists and non-Buddhists. Over some 750 years, its
faculty included some of the most revered scholars of
Mahayana Buddhism. Nalanda Mahavihara taught six major
Buddhist schools and philosophies such as Yogacara and
Sarvastivada as well as subjects such as grammar, medicine,
logic and mathematics. It was sacked and destroyed by the
troops of Muhammad bin Bakhtiyar Khalji, partly restored
thereafter, and continued to exist till about 1400 CE. Today, it is
a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In 2010, the Government of India passed a resolution to revive
the famous university, and a contemporary institute, Nalanda
University, was established at Rajgir. It has been listed as an
"Institute of National Importance" by the Government of
India.
