David Livingstone was born in Scotland in 1813. He grew up in a small town with
six brothers and sisters. Livingstone’s parents were religious and the family
belonged to the Christian Church. At the age of 10, he got a job to help his family
and went to school in the evenings. In 1836, Livingstone went to university to study
5 medicine and in 1840, he moved to London. He joined the London Missionary
Society because he wanted to become a missionary doctor and bring Christianity to
people in Africa.
In 1841, after he graduated from medical school, Livingstone travelled to Africa. He
was the first missionary doctor to reach central Africa and meet the local tribes. The
10 tribes liked Livingstone. He gave them medical care and he improved the lives of
many people.
Livingstone was also known for his expeditions as an explorer. In 1855, he reached
a spectacular waterfall in Central Africa. He was the first European to see it and it
was named Victoria Falls for Queen Victoria of England. Then he followed the
15 Zambesi River until he came to the Indian Ocean. He became the first European to
cross Africa and when he returned to Britain in 1856, he was a national hero. He
wrote books about his travels and they became very popular.
In 1866, Livingstone went on a trip to look for the beginning of the River Nile. The
trip was very difficult. Many places in Africa were discovered by Livingstone but
20 the beginning of the River Nile wasn’t found. He made maps of many rivers and
lakes. Livingstone was awarded the gold medal of the Royal Geographical Society
of London for his discoveries in Africa.
During his final years, Livingstone became very ill, but he did not want to leave
Africa. Finally, he died there in 1873. His body was taken back to England and he
25 was buried in Westminster Abbey.
