What’s In

Choose the correct answer.

_______ 1. Use (synthetic, natural) fertilizers.

_______ 2. Choose native plants to your area so that it would need (more, less )
water.

_______ 3. Use (nontoxic, toxic) pesticides

_______ 4. Excessive use of toxic materials can make nearby waterways (polluted,
clean)

_______ 5. Look for (natural, artificial) alternatives to chemical-based household

products.
_______ 6. (Never, Always) clean up your pets’ wastes.

_______ 7. Pump septic tanks at least every (three, five) years.

_______ 8. Leave bodies of water (dirty, clean).
_______ 9. (Keep, disturb) animals found in the shoreline.

_______ 10. Use (motorized motors, canoe) to snorkel near the coral reefs.

What’s New

Read and analyze the situation below.

It is a harvest time. The farmers are taking their harvested product in town.
The cousins, Mario and Gani will use the same kind of transportation to bring their
products to the Rizal town market. Both will be using their carts.

4
Mario’s rice field is 90 meters away from the town market while the rice field of
Gani is only 60 meters away.
If they will start to travel at the same time and the same speed, which of the
two will reached the town market faster? Why do you say so?

Mario, 90 meters

Gani, 60 meters

What is It

Let us study the paragraph below.

Distance

Motion is such an everyday, ordinary thing that anywhere to look, there are
objects moving or in motion. All objects move in various ways.
Distance is an important factor in measuring motion.
Distance is the measure of how far or near two points are from one another. It
can be measured using different ways such as time, landmarks, or body parts.
There are appropriate tools and ways in measuring distance so that you can
tell whether an object is far or near.
Distance should always be exact, measured accurately and based on a
standard unit of measurement.
Distance should be measured by measuring tools such as the ruler, meter
stick, tape measure, measuring wheel and ultrasonic distance measurer.
In metric system, which is the world standard for measurement, the standard
unit of measurement used for distance is meter. Add the prefix kilo when referring to
distance is quite far. Prefixes like deci, centi and milli are used if the length is quite
short.

5
The distance covered by a moving object is affected by its speed, or the
measure of how fast it moves. The faster it moves, the shorter time it takes for it to
cover a certain distance. On the contrary, the slower it moves, the longer it takes for
it to cover the same distance. In each time, the faster an object moves, the greater
the distance that it covers, and the slower it moves, the less the distance that it
covers.
Distance can be calculated by multiplying the speed of an object in motion
and the time it spent. This can be expressed as:

Distance travelled= speed x time

d= v x t

In solving for the distance, follow the following steps:

First-Identify the given.

Second-Identify what is asked.
Third- Write the formula.
Fourth-Do the substitution and the solution.
Fifth Write the final answer.

For instance:
A tricycle travels at a constant speed of 20 meters per second. How far will it
travel in 10 seconds?

1.What are the given?

The given are 20 meters per second and 10 seconds.
2.What is asked?
Distance travelled by the tricycle. .
3.What is the formula?
The formula is Distance= Speed x Time
4.How to solve?
A. Substitute
Distance=Speed x Time
Distance=20 meters per second x 10 seconds
B. Solve
20 meters per second x 10 seconds=200 meters
5.What is the answer?
Answer = 200 meters –the distance travelled by the tricycle.
