COMBUSTION ENGINEERING – MIDTERM EXAM

COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND ARCHITECTURE
MECHANICAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

Problems:

1) The ultimate analysis of coal is given below:

C = 75.01% H = 4.83% O = 15.31%
S = 1.05% Moisture = 2.5% Ash = 1.3%
Find the volume of air needed at room temperature and pressure
needed to burn the coal.

2) A boiler with 80% efficiency has a steam flowrate of 150lb/hr.

Steam dry and saturated at 200psia while the feedwater
temperature is 230°F. Find the number of days a circular fuel
tank with 54 ft long and 5 ft diameter can supply for continuous
operation if it has a 35°API fuel oil.

3) A coal fired steam boiler requires 10kg of air per coal at

barometric pressure of 96.3kPaa for combustion. It uses 2500kg
of coal per hour. The flue gas has a temperature of 290°C and
an average molecular weight of 30. Find the diameter of the
chimney if it has an allowable gas velocity of 7m/s assuming an
ash loss of 9%.

4) A fuel used in a boiler has the following analysis:

C = 86.1% H = 12.5%
O = 0.4% S = 1%
The fuel rate is 350kg/hr and the furnace has a 39% excess air
supplied. The air enters the heater at 15°C and leaves at 125°C
Find the heat energy transferred to the air per hour.
