Thesis statements- English comp

A thesis statement usually appears at the end of the introductory paragraph of a paper
and offers a concise summary of the main point or claim of your essay. The thesis statement is
developed, supported, and explained in the course of the paper by means of examples and
evidence. Thesis statements help organize and develop arguments, and serve as a signal to
readers about the topic of a paper.

A good thesis states the writer's opinion on whatever subject in a ordered and traceable
way. Your thesis statement should have one singular Idea. the essay we read in class had three
areas that the essay would talk about but one main point: Certain areas of the school give me
abundant positive memories/feelings. I should be noted that due to having to put forth several
ideas in the same essay some papers have more than one thesis statement, although this is not
the norm and is usually discouraged unless absolutely necessary.

Do not make your thesis an announcement of your subject matter, use it to define your
attitude towards a subject. Do not use “In my opinion” or “I believe” it is unnecessary because it
is assumed your paper will be about what is stated in your thesis. Do not insult, label or profane
your readers. They are taking the time to hear what you have to say. Respect them. Don’t
merely state a fact. A thesis is an assertion of opinion that leads to discussion. Don't select an
idea that it to open ended or a forgone conclusion. Do not be afraid to state your opinion
because it might be wrong, or others will believe your a fool to think in such ways. It's your
paper and your statement, which makes it right. Remember that many times writers come up
with a new and more on point thesis after their first draft. That's great! Consider that draft a
prewriting exercise and begin another draft using the new thesis.
