students all over the world. Mobile technologies are one of the basic needs a person must
have, it can access communication to other people and have some information they want to
find. Lately, students became attached to their mobile phones and see it as part of their life.
There is nothing new as a modern people access phone for their personal life. But students
keep using it without knowing what are the effects of excessive usage might bring.
Students spend more time with their phones but doesn’t in their personal activities. As a
matter of fact, students use their phones not just for communicating but also to do their some
activities and some schoolwork. But having those social-networking such as Facebook,
Twitter, TikTok etc. kills their time to do their homework or some activities that affects their
performance as a student.
The researchers found out that students are proven to use smartphones more on non-
academic performances such as their social basis than their academic purpose. It shows that
there are negative bond between mobile usage and academic performance because, mobile
phones bring negative results to the STEM students in their studies academically.
In this topic, the researchers decided to conduct this study because of students who are
more active in their social- networking site than their activity performances. As time goes by,
being excessive in mobile usage has gone something to their academic performances that
may lead them to fail in some subjects. So we chose to have this study to prevent students for
being attached often to their phones doing unnecessary things aside from their academic
performances.
This paper raises different questions that sought to be answered throughout the study:
1. What is the effect of excessive use of mobile phones on the academic performance of
students?
2. What are the obstacles faced by students in the excessive use of mobile phones?
3. What are the positive effects of using too much mobile phones on the academic
performance of students?
4. What strategies can help students overcome the effects of excessive use of mobile
phones?
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
In this research, the theory of Mobile Overuse/excessive mobile usage focuses on the
excessive use of mobile phones that have nothing to do with school and how it affects the
academic performance of students. The Theory Excessive use of mobile can often have an
effect on a students, studies will neglected and grades drop, blurred vision, obsession with
social media and other possible effects of excessive use of mobile devices.
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
Effects of excessive mobile usage to the academic performance of grade 12 STEM
students. As time passes, students rely on their mobile Devices on a daily basis. The
researchers come up with an idea of how the excessive mobile usage affects the academic

The respondents will be limited to fifty (50) students from STEM 161 A and B. The
respondents will answer the survey and this will serve as the baseline of the study. The study
started on October 15, 2022 (Ongoing) and expected to finish in three months.
In addition, the subjects will only be limited to the said school because of the limited
amounts of financial resources. The duration of the study will be conducted within the first

The results of this study can help the students, teachers and also future researchers to
allow and inform them of what are the effects of excessive mobile use of mobile phones.

RELATED LITERATURE
According to Jogendra Kumar Nayak (2018) in his article, they are used for a wide
range of purposes besides communicating and messaging, including live chatting, data
search, mobile banking, entertainment, and so forth. Personal conversations and one-on-one
contact between people have been replaced by chats over smartphones. In many cases, the
level of usage has risen to the point that it has become addictive. Rice, Hagen, and
Zamanzadeh (2018 This phenomenon creates problems to their academic performances, the
addiction got worse, and lastly, their mental health and has become unstable. Therefore, the
Nowadays, people may become so preoccupied with their phones that some are
constantly checking their phones while walking or driving a vehicle. Despite the mobile
phone's apparent proliferation over the past few decades, little is known about its influence,
particularly its impact on academic achievement and student learning. Mobile devices and the
correlates and effects they have on students are topics of expanding interest, although the
magnitude of the overall effect is still unknown and results vary between similar studies.
academically. As students spend more time on their phones, all these activities may have an
impact on their academic performance. Several individuals are glued to their phones because
of the resources on the internet and the required classes. Students spending too much time on
their smartphones can develop addictions. Many students now use online versions of their
textbooks, reference materials, and daily newspapers. This research analyzes online behaviors
such as data usage (upload, download), website visits, and their positive (or negative) effects
on academic performance. They looked into these concerns and discovered that many
students routinely report using various electronic media, including smartphones, while
attending in-class lectures, reading at home, and completing assignments or homework. They
came to the conclusion that there is a negative correlation between multitasking and academic
performance.
Parents and educators are very concerned about teenagers' problematic smartphone use.
Filipinos spend 10.3 hours a day on average on their smartphones in the second and third
quarters of 2018, according to Statista (The Statistics Portal). In 2020, a survey found that
among Filipino teenagers, the prevalence of SA was 62.6%.A local newspaper (Philippine
Daily Inquirer) recently revealed that 33.3% of Filipinos—or one in three—said they couldn't
live without their smartphones. This indicates that NMP is also evident among Filipino

Mobile phone is one of the useful gadgets that ever made to this day. The amount of
people using cellphone has rapidly increasing every year, and the most common users of
mobile phone are the students. Either they use it academically or for personal use. The
number of possession and ownership has greatly increased in the past decade (Rideout,
2017). According to Liu (2019), the excessive use of mobile phone has amplified the
concerns about the effects such as on mental health and sleep. It said that using mobile phone
excessively has a negative effect to us and mostly students that are highly susceptible.
In India, according to (Telecom Regulatory of India, 2018), there are 1156.8 million of
mobile users, 56.2% are from urban and 43.8% are rural subscribers. These millions of users
had proven that mobile phone is essential most likely to students. However, enormously
using cellphone can affect their academic performance. On the other side, Chinese university
students spend over 5h a day on mobile phone and around 79% of students use their mobile
phones during class (My COS Research Institute, 2018). This proved that it affects their
academic performances by using cellphone during class. It signifies that too much use of
According to the studies of Xianchen Liu, Yachen Luo, Zhen-Zhen Liu, Yanyun Yang,
Jianghong Liu, and Cun-Xian Jia (2020), prolonged mobile phone use (MPU) is prevalent in
adolescents. In this study, Chinese teenage students' academic performance and prolonged
MPU were compared. The excessive use of mobile devices could have serious negative
effects on our academic performance as well as our health. Teenagers these days are
frequently consumed by their phones, often without realizing the potential consequences. A
self-administered questionnaire was used to gather information for their findings on
demographics, weekday and weekend MPU, amount of sleep, insomnia, depression, and
academic performance. While achievement test scores fell significantly, the proportion of
students who reported poor academic performance increased significantly. The study found
that among Chinese adolescents taking topic assessments and self-reporting their academic
Abstract
The present study analytically investigated the effects of excessive mobile usage to the
student academic performance. Researchers have found out that using too much of mobile
phones could affects student academic performance. It could affect their performance
positively or negatively. The study also found out that a right guideline to limits their usage
of mobile phones can alter the negative effects on their academic performances. Aside from
this study, more research is needed to better understand the effects of excessively using
