INSTRUCTION:

Make a list of Filipino cultural institution and practice such as BAYANIHAN, PAMANHIKAN,
HARANA, MISA DE GALLO and the like. Describe each of them and explain and what type of norm if
belongs to, keep in mind that cultural institution and values may belong to several types of norm at the
same time.

1. BAYANIHAN

ANSWER: SOCIETAL NORM

- The bayanihan spirit is a way of life in the Philippines that emphasizes assisting others
without expecting anything in return in order to accomplish a certain purpose. Early, when
houses were constructed of flimsier materials like coconut leaves, bayanihan also meant
literally assisting neighbors move their homes.

2. PAMANHIKAN

ANSWER: TECHNICAL NORM

- Pamamanhikan the Filipino culture places a strong emphasis on respect, and the groom
and bride honor their parent by participating in pamamanhikan. The bride’s family home is
visited by the groom’s family at the pamanhikan. Typically the groom brings Filipino food
and treats.

3. HARANA

ANSWER: AESTHETIC NORM

- It is classic example of courtship music, in which a man courted a woman by singing to her
at night under her window. It is widely used in various regions of the Philippines and is
accompanied with a particular musical genre, a set of rules, and a code of behavior.

4. MISA DE GALLO

ANSWER: ETHICAL OR MORAL NORM

- The nine Masses known as Misa de gallo, a catholic custom that originated in the
Philippines, provide the faithful with a chance to spiritually prepare for Christmas. As a
devotional practice in the tradition of the novena, it is a series of nine masses usually
celebrated during advents from December 16-24 in preparation for Christmas day.
