Child of deaf adults or CODA is a movie directed by Sian Heder.

This

movie was given a title CODA because it involves a girl who has a family that are all

deaf. They have 4 members in their family, her parents and her 1 sibling are all deaf

and can’t speak that is why all of her life she is the one who is helping her family with

communicating with other people by interpreting what her family wants to say or

what other people are saying. In this way, her family are able to communicate with

other people. Given the fact that they cannot speak and hear, Ruby is always there

to help them to communicate that is why it is a lot easier for them to communicate to

others. It is so hard for them when Ruby is not around because they are having a

hard time to understand what other people say and they are having a hard time to

say what they want to say, only Ruby stands as their interpreter that helps them to

easily communicate because it is giving them a hard time when they want to talk to

other people but their disabilities don’t let them. Being deaf and not able to speak

really hinders a person to communicate with others that is why we should be thankful

because we don’t have this kind of disabilities that will hinders us to express

ourselves and to communicate. Communication is very important because In our

daily life, communication helps us build relationships by allowing us to share our

experiences, and needs, and helps us connect to others. It’s the essence of life,

allowing us to express feelings, pass on information and share thoughts. We all need

to communicate. It so hard to be deaf and not able to speak that is why we should be

more patient and understanding.

The seaside town of Coastal Cape Ann’s Gloucester, Massachusetts is

the backdrop for the story of the Rossi family. Many Hollywood movies take place in

fictional towns or are not actually filmed in the place they are set. In the case of
“CODA,” it turns out that not only is Gloucester, Massachusetts a real place. In fact,

it is the principal filming location for most of the movie. According to Discover

Gloucester, the city is on Cape Ann, about 45 minutes north of Boston. Gloucester is

famous for being one of the biggest and most productive fishing ports on the East

Coast, as well as America’s oldest seaport. It’s a great place to go for some classic

lighthouses and whale watching. The majority of CODA was filmed in and around

Gloucester, Massachusetts, which also serves as the setting for this summer’s 2019

picture. Gloucester, Massachusetts, a charming Cape Ann coastal community, is

only 45 minutes by vehicle from Boston’s city center. Since the arrival of the first

European residents in the 17th century, the little city has a lengthy maritime history.

Gloucester’s Fish Pier served as the location for the Salgado’s Seafood Company’s

neighborhood docks. Ruby attends Gloucester High School, although the real site of

the movie was Beverly High School, which first opened its doors in 1923 and is now

Briscoe Middle School. Ruby enjoys swimming at the former Steel Derrick Quarry, a

well-liked hangout in the Pigeon Cove neighborhood. A beautiful granite storm wall

guards Lane’s Cove, a historic public landing harbor. Heder also used the stunning

choirmaster’s home, a seaside Victorian manor owned by a friend of hers where she

spent some time during her formative years.

In the movie CODA, Ruby Rossi is a girl who has a deaf family. She

always helps her family and she stands as the interpreter of her family. She always

prioritize her family because she knows that her family members really need her but

there came a time that she needs to decide either she’s gonna choose her family or

she’s gonna choose her self to pursue her passion in singing and this decision really

gives her a hard time because her family is really important to her and at the same
time, she really wanted to pursue her dreams. Leo Rossi is the older brother of

Ruby, he felt left out because he wants to stand on his own feet and to help or

protect his family and to help Ruby to pursue her dreams but because he has a

disability, he’s not able to do that. Their parents, Jackie Rossi and Frank Rossi are

also deaf but they are doing their best to support their family. And in order to do that,

they started a business that they think will help them to support their family. Before

Ruby achieved her dreams, there are people in her life that help her and give her

difficulties. One of the people who help her is Bernardo Villalobos, a choirmaster and

her teacher. Mr. Bernardo helps her to improve her singing skills and in her audition.

On the other hand, her classmates or schoolmates like Audra gives her difficulties

because they made fun of Ruby that makes her unconfident. But Ruby did her best

to improve to be the best version of herself, so that they won’t make fun of her again.

There are several different types of conflict here in this movie like man vs.

Itself, man vs. man, and man vs. society. Man vs. Itself when the time that Ruby is

making personal decision whether she will leave her family to pursue her dreams or

she will stay with her family, she had a difficulty in doing this decision because she is

considering many facts that will be the effects of her decision. Man vs. Man when the

time that their family is fighting for their rights with the persons who control the

industry they are in. All the fishermen including her family are fighting or arguing with

head of the fishing industry for them to have the right that’s for them. Man vs. Society

when the time that Ruby’s classmates and schoolmates are bullying her because of

their family’s social status and because of the disability of her parents, but Ruby

doesn’t let them affect how she love her family and their source of income. Ruby did

her best to protect their family with the ones who oppressing them.
In this movie, Ruby and Leo is the child of deaf parents but Ruby is the

only one who doesn’t have a disability because his older brother also has a disability

like their parents that is why Ruby becomes her family’s interpreter. Their family’s

source of income is fishing but the time came that the head of fishing industry wants

to make all the fishermen pay a lot of money that will affect their earnings in fishing,

this leads them to decide that they start a business of selling their own fish. This

business requires a lot of communication that is why the family of Ruby really need

her, but she also has a life to live and she wanted go to the town to study in an

academy of music because she wants to pursue her dreams in singing. This is such

difficult decision for Ruby and her family but at the end they let Ruby pursue her

dreams in singing and they all support Ruby with her dreams.

Before I ended up with the strand that I chose which is ABM, I consider

first all the things that I want to happen and my goals. This gives me difficulty in

choosing a strand because at first I want to take the STEM strand but I’m doubting

myself if I will last in that strand. But I ended up with ABM because I realized that this

is the perfect strand for the course that I will take in college. Same with the movie

CODA, there are a lot of decisions they made for their life. And in order to have the

best decision for their life, they consider all the and the facts and right things that will

affect their decision.
