MIS is short for Management Information System. Management information system, or MIS, broadly
refers to a computer-based system that offers managers the tools to organize, evaluate and efficiently
manage departments within an organization. In order to provide past, present, and prediction information,
a management information system can include software that helps in decision-making, data resources
such as databases, the hardware resources of a system, decision support systems, people management and
project management applications, and any computerized processes that enable the department to run
efficiently.
The following notions are the important roles of the MIS to wit:
 It helps in clerical transaction processing.
 MIS for Top-Level Management: in goal setting, strategic planning, and evolving the business
plans and their implementation.
 It helps in strategic planning, management control, operational control, and transaction
processing.
  It answers queries on the data pertaining to the transaction, the status of a record, and references
on a variety of documents.
 MIS for Junior Management: Providing the operational data for planning, scheduling, and
control, and helping them further in decision-making at the operation level to correct an out-of-
control situation.
 MIS for Middle Management: In short-term planning, target setting, and controlling the business
functions which is supported using the management tools of planning and control.
 MIS satisfies diverse needs through a variety of systems such as Query Systems, Analysis
Systems, Modelling Systems, and Decision Support Systems.
 It plays the role of information generation, communication, and problem identification and helps
in the process of decision-making.
In conclusion, organizations today just cannot survive and grow without proper planning, implementing,
and maintaining MIS.
Moreover, we still need to discover the very essence of MIS. Why do we really need MIS.? Is it really
important? The following are the notions that answer the query about why we need MIS;

 Employees in the same organization are able to easily access the required information for day-to-
day operations.
 Management information systems make it possible by giving relevant information to decision-
makers to arrive at a decision.
 Management information systems record all company business transactions and provide a
reference point for the transactions.
 Short Message Service (SMS) & Email makes it possible to communicate with customers and
suppliers from within the MIS system that an organization is using.
MIS also has Real-time issues that need to be resolved such as, (1). Frequently changing customer
expectations (2). Dynamic job allocation. (3). Transaction cost. (4). Market forecast. (5). Data
consolidation and lack of automation. (6). Competitor management. (7). Increasing customer base and,
(8). Technology skill upgrade. However, MIS has a scope that provides managers to have a variety of
reports and displays to management, it also provides managers with information products that support
much of their day-to-day decision-making needs.
