Traduction p 13

Dear old thing,

It is the first time that I am writing you since I left for Edinburgh /my departure for Edinburgh, and I
hope you won’t find any inconveniences with me writing in French. Indigenous people here are
nothing near what we thought they were like.

Thus, since I’ve been leaving in Paris, I’ve never been once deceived by the French courtesy: you’re
being hold the door when leaving the theatre; the janitor gives me useful information; and my
neighbor has invited me to a party at which all the distinguished people of the district will attend. Oh,
I almost forgot, I was very offended the other day: I had succeeded in initiating a passionate
conversation with an unknown woman at a restaurant but when the dessert arrived, this lady sent
me off with a charming smile! I should have been more careful. Anyways, travelling teaches you so
many things!

Malcolm.

Traduction p 14

I’m writing you this letter today because it’s going to be hard for me to tell you how I feel while
facing you. I know that I wasn’t that shy in your company, and maybe you’ll find the fact that I am
now curious. When you will be reading those lines, I would have disappeared from your life forever; I
could no longer bear lying to myself and to you. I must confess it now: I ceased to like you since the
day I understood that you married me for my money. You should have expected it right? After all,
you should have felt something like that was coming one of these days. Love cannot be eternally
blind! You’ll inherit 2 cars, the apartment in London, the countryside house and quite a bit of money
at the bank…what you would call the essential stuff of life! You’ll have the comfort and the wealth!
Shall you also have peace and spirit. I also wish you happiness…but will you be able to enjoy true
happiness?

Traduction p.15:

Explorers had stopped on the bank of the river and asked themselves if they could cross it. Were they
going to have to go back to the camp? They had been given an escort of a hundred of soldiers who
were protecting them from rebels. They were travelling in this country since a few weeks, but
nothing had happened yet.
How impressing it was, this tropical forest! We were hearing the monkeys scream and the lions roar
beyond those high trees.

There must be an easy way to cross this river, said the team leader. I hope not to have to cross it by
swimming; I'd rather fight with rebels than with crocodiles. Those who live by this river are reputed
to be the biggest and most terrible in the whole country!

Translation 1p17:

Looking for an apartment.

Leaned against a shop window, Tom was looking to the top floor of the building in which he was
supposed to visit an apartment as soon as the estate agent he had called would arrive.

Looking down, he saw the latter going out from the underground station just opposite. No sooner
had the employer shook his hand that he exclaimed: “This is a very good opportunity, you know! The
former tenant has had to move: his boss fired him, so that he could not afford a rent this high. In
addition, the owner absolutely does not want any children because he has just redecorated the
apartment only two or three years ago. Everybody, can understand that, right?”

“Of course”, Tom answered politely, while thinking that the prospect of a moving when he would get
married, that was after possible, was not attractive.
