STUDENT REFLECTION 5

The first item inquires, "What is the significance of Rule 8?" 'Well, its significance tells us

that by taking positive action in plenty of time, we can avoid confusion and reduce the risk of

collision.' Every vessel must use all available means appropriate to the circumstances and

conditions to determine if there is a risk of collision. because rule number 8 stated that when

making a change, consider what it might look like from the other vessel's perspective. Wherever

possible, turn to show a different bow aspect, so that a vessel can see a change in sidelight to avoid

a collision.

Who will follow the rule in the second question? Of course, every vessel should comply

because it is critical for every vessel and everyone's safety. Also, if the COLREGs require you to

'not impede' or 'give way to' another vessel, you must take immediate action to eliminate the risk

of collision. And the answer to the third question is yes, because the rule states that "any action to

avoid collision shall be taken in accordance with the Rules of this Part and shall, if the

circumstances of the case permit, be positive, made in ample time, and with due regard for the
