HOW TO ANNOTATE NONFICTION

BEFORE READING
CIRCLE title.
 Identify information about the author, source, and publication date.
 TURN all subheadings into questions,
 CIRCLE all text features ( bullets, subheadings, pictures, graphs, diagrams etc)
 Identify the topic/subject , any Background Information about the topic
 HIGHLIGHT any repetition, Author’s Bias, restatement, and rhetorical questions
 UNDERLINE cause and effect, compare-contrast, chronological, etc.)
 ANSWER questions you created from subheadings
 Put (PARENTHESESE) around vocabulary
 Summarize paragraphs, Make predictions, Formulate opinions (agree or disagree
with the author), Make connections
 Ask questions (Clarify/Connect/Conclude)
 Analyze author’s point of view
 Write reflections/reactions/comments
AFTER READING
 Author’s purpose, message to the readers, your opinion
 Go back and ANSWER your questions and write a reflection
on the significance of the title.
