Northern States and UTs (Union Territories)

Chandigarh, Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Punjab, Rajasthan,
Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh are the states and UTs in Northern India

a. Climate: Most of Northern India lies mainly in the north temperate zone of the Earth. Warm
summers, gentle monsoons, and chilly to subfreezing winters are the norm for the region's climate.
North India has one of the most diverse climates in the whole globe. The bulk of the Indo-Gangetic
plain has midsummer temperatures that are routinely over 35 °C; in Rajasthan's Thar Desert and as
high as 49 °C in Delhi, these temperatures have been recorded. In the winter, the lowest temperature
on the plains falls to below 5 °C and, in some places, below the freezing point. Heavy to moderate
snowfall is experienced in the states of Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh, J&K, and Uttarakhand. Most of
North India's winters are notorious for their heavy fog.
b. Terrain: North of Peninsular India, North India is mostly on the continent of India. The
Himalayas, which lie to its north, form the separation between the Tibetan plateau and the Indian
subcontinent. West of it are the Gujarat state-bordering Aravalli Range and the Thar Desert, which
is shared by Pakistan and North India. According to certain views, North India's southern border is
considered to be the Vindhya Mountains.
The predominant geographical features of North India are:
The Indo-Gangetic plain, which spans the states and union territories of Chandigarh, Delhi, Punjab,
Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and Jharkhand.
The Himalayas and sub-Himalayan belt, which lie in the states of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh,
Jammu and Kashmir and West Bengal;
The Thar Desert, which lies mainly in the state of Rajasthan.
The states of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Jammu and Kashmir also have a large forest
coverage.
c. Occupation of people: Agriculture, Forestry, Fishing and Water Transportation
4. Languages people speak: Hindi is the most extensively spoken language in North India area. It
has legal standing in Delhi's union territory as well as the states of Haryana, Himachal Pradesh,
Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh. Punjabi predominates in Punjab, where it is the official
language. It is also well-represented in the areas close by. In Delhi, Jammu & Kashmir, and Uttar
Pradesh, Urdu has official status. The so-called Hindi Belt, which includes the majority of Rajasthani
languages, Western Hindi dialects, Awadhi, Bhojpuri, Garhwali, and Kumaoni, covers a sizable
portion of North India.
5. Most densely populated state in particular directions: Uttar Pradesh is the most densely
populated state in India as it has more number of people in a given unit of area. It has a population
density of 828/km2. Delhi is the most populated Union Territory in India, the current metro area
population of Delhi in 2023 is 32,941,000.
