Purpose of Role:
In full charge of the entire watch with responsibilities for the safe and efficient operation of all machinery
within the machinery space as directed by the Chief Engineer and the Company's Procedures.

• Ensure that temperatures, pressures, etc. on all machinery and boilers are taken and recorded during
the watch, as per Chief Engineer standing orders;
• Be familiar with the operation of all the machinery and be aware of its limits;
• Whilst the vessel is on normal sea passage on bridge control, limit the maximum machinery output
as instructed by the Chief Engineer (standing orders) with decisive instructions to the officer on the
Bridge;
• Without hesitation, call out the Chief Engineer, Staff Chief Engineer, 1st Engineer, Refrigeration
Engineer or Electrician for assistance if in doubt about anything;
• Whilst the engine room is in "stand-by" condition, he will have the direct assistance of the Chief
Engineer and Electrician for the operation of the plant;
• Whilst on watch, will have the assistance of a Motorman / Oiler. The Engineer is responsible for the
Motorman / Oiler and must supervise their duties. The Motorman / Oiler reports to the Engineer
and is allowed to leave the machinery spaces for limited periods as part of their watch keeping
duties but only with the Engineer's permission - these may include inspections of steering gear,
hydraulics, bow thrusters, header tanks and refrigeration equipment;
• While on watch, will not leave the control room unless formally relieved by another competent
engine officer;
• Where another person is given responsibility for the maintenance of individual items of the plant,
this will not relieve the Watchkeepers from attention to these items;
• Will keep the oil record book updated.

The 3rd Engineer Senior may be required to perform additional operational and maintenance duties on
systems and equipment as follows:
• Oil fired boiler and exhaust gas boiler, including the testing and treatment of boiler and cooling
water systems on main/auxiliary engines, AC, fresh water generator and chlorination system;
• Steam, condenser and feed water system, including condenser pumps, steam valves, steam traps
and heating system on fuel tanks;
• Fresh water system including FW generators;

• Report all defects and deficiencies found on watch so that they can be made good without delay;
• Report to the Bridge any factors that may affect the manoeuvring and running characteristics of the
plant and the safety of the ship;
• Confirm location of all fire alarms with the Bridge;
• Promote a good communication and working relationship with the Deck Officers to assist in the
efficient operation of the vessel.
