Tutorial 1
Instructions
1. Complete the following problems in the space provided.
2. Submit your completed work at the end of the session.
3. Completion of this tutorial counts toward your overall course participation mark.

Problem 1
Determine the loading conditions and the design load for a roof for beam with the following
loads: Calculate Area load for the roof.
 Live load (snow) on roof = L = 1.50 kN/m2 = 1.50 kPa
 Dead load on the roof = D = 2.50 kPa

1.25*D + 1.5*S + 0.5*L

1.25*(2.50kPa) + 1.5*(1.50kPa) + 0.5*(0)

= 5.375

Problem 2
In the following pipe rack frame, list all the load types that can be applied to each member of the
structure:
 Beams: 1 and 2
 Columns: 3 and 4

Problem 3
Using the Building Code for reference, determine the load combinations and the design loads
for each member (1 to 4) in the two-level pipe rack structure shown In Problem 2.
 Height of structure = 13 m
S = I [Ss (Cb*Cw*Cs*Ca)+ Sr]
 Dead – self weight = 1.5 kPa S = 1*[1.80*(0.8*1*1*1) + 0.10]
 Empty (dry) weight of piping = 1.2 kPa S = 1.54

 Live load – piping content = 0.8 kPa Ce = (h/10)^0.2

Ce = (13/10)^0.2
 Environmental data:
Ce = 1.05387
o Snow (Ss) = 1.80 kPa
o Sr = 0.10 kPa P = q*I*Ce*Cp*Cg
o Cb = 0.8 P = 0.56*1*1.05387*Cp*2.0
o Cw = 1.0
o Cs = 1.0
o Ca = 1
 Wind: Reference velocity pressure
o q1/50 = 0.56 kPa
 Use the following Cp pressure factors:
o Cp = 0.5 outward for leeward wall (column)
o Co = 0.7 outward for uplift on roof
o Cp = 0.8 inward direction for windward wall (column)

B1 - 1.25*D + 1.5*L + 0.5*S 1.25*D + 1.5*S + 0.5*L

1.25*2.7 + 1.5*0.8 + 0.5*1.54 1.25*2.7 + 1.5*1.54 + 0.5*0.8
= 5.345 = 6.085
B2 - 1.25*D + 1.5*L
1.25*2.7 + 1.5*0.8
= 4.575
C3 - P = 0.56*1*1.05387*0.5*2.0
= 0.5901672
Fy = maxB1 + maxB2 Fx = w1+w2
Fy = [6.085 + 4.575]L/2 Fx = 0.5901672
Fy = 5.33L
C4 - P = 0.56*1*1.05387*0.8*2.0
= 0.94426752
Fy = 5.33L Fx = w1+w2
Fx = 0.94426752
