Title:
I. Objectives:

 Define basic and key terms in TELL;

 Identify and discuss the role of educators and learners in TELL;
 Enumerate and discuss the benefits of technology for language learning;
 Discuss essential points to consider when integrating any ICT in facilitating language
education.

II. Topic: “TECHNOLOGY IN LANGUAGE LEARNING”

a. What is technology in language education?

b. The drives: What is behind our decisions regarding instructional technology?
c. Role of Educators in Technology-Enhanced Language Learning (TELL)
d. Role of Technology for Learners
e. Key Benefits of Technology for Language Learning

III. Contents

a. Key Terms
 Information and communication technologies (ICT)
- Diverse set of technological tools and resources used to transmit, store, create, share or
exchange information.
 Teaching Language Learning (TELL)

b. What is Technology in Language Education?

 Technology can and should be used by language educators to enhance language instruction,
practice, and assessment, as articulated in the World-Readiness Standards for Learning
Languages.
 According to Pisapia (1994) Integrating Technology with teaching means the use of
learning technologies to introduce, reinforce, supplement and extend skills.
 ICT integration is not merely mastering the hardware and software skills, UNESCO (2005).

c. Paradigm Shifting: Teaching Support System from Traditional to Modern and ICT Based

TRADITIONAL TEACHING SUPPORT SYSTEM (TEACHING AIDS)

The usual traditional teaching aids are blackboards, textbooks, charts, pictures, posters,
maps, atlases, globes, flashcards, flip cards, worksheets, science lab apparatus and materials,
models, crossword puzzles, quizzes, storytelling, dramatization, one-act plays, dictionaries,
dictionaries, reference books, learning toys and abacus.

MODERN TEACHING AIDS

The modern teaching aids include computers, internet surfing, laptops, electronic
notebooks, e-readers, computer educational games, online dictionaries, online encyclopedias,

picture dictionaries, talking dictionaries, online tests, online e-books, audio-video teaching aids for
learning,

various subjects including languages; Powerpoint slides and games; flash educational games;
Lesson relayed on radio through satellites; lesson on TV relayed by certain TV channels;
Educational CDs and DVDs, projectors; interactive whiteboards also called smartboards etc.

ICT BASED TEACHING SUPPORT SYSTEM

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is an electronic means of capturing,
processing, storing, communicating information. ICT has proven to be a vital form of teaching in
today’s scenario since it provides ease for the teacher and the student to store, retrieve, and
manipulate the information. Therefore, this has been encouraging active learning and self-
responsibility of learning with the use of ICT teaching aids. It has been made it possible to reach
the student in any part of the world. Teaching can thus take the shape of Computer-assisted learning
(distance learning), videoconferencing, projectors, and even mobiles. This technology has the
ability to not only engaging the students in subjective activities but also enhance their cognitive
skills.

d. Roles of Educators and Learners in TELL

The instructor is a facilitator for the course who will guide the learners through the course or
subject content. The instructor’s responsibilities are:

 To present, introduce, and guide discussion of topics, ideas, or concepts and challenge the
learners to think.
 To provide own ideas and opinions during discussions and listen and learn from learners.
 To work diligently to have all learners actively participate, learn about the topics, share, and
exchange ideas and information, reach course competencies, and develop their thinking
ability.
 To hold learners responsible for their own learning.

The learner is an active participant in the teaching and learning activities. The learner’s
responsibilities are:

 To actively listen to others, think, make comments, discuss ideas, ask questions, read, write,
talk, observe and listen for understanding.
 To respect others’ ideas, work to understand others’ points of view, encourage others, learn
from others, use, and build on ideas and opinions.
 To contribute to learning of the group by using past experience and knowledge and sharing
information and relevant life experiences.
 To do the best work possible in all course work by active participation, writing tasks, pre-
work (homework), individual study, contribution to class learning and group work
effectiveness.
 To avoid relying on the instructor for learning—learning is an individual responsibility.
 To complete pre-work.
 To critically consider subject or course content.

e. 5 Benefits of Using New Technology in Language Learning

 Ease in managing and monitoring student progress
 Create a unique experience as much for the teacher as the students
 Promote interactivity and collaboration within learning

f. Essential Points to Consider when Integrating any ICT in Facilitating Language Education

Technology integrated learning requires certain strategies to make it effective in learners’ learning
and teachers’ professional development, White and Ray (2015, pp. 17-18).

 The teachers must have the knowledge of the subject.

 Similarly, they should appeal to all learning styles.
 In the same way, they should facilitate the content.
 They have to create platforms for learning.
 The course documents should be available to every student.
 They have to communicate clear goals.
 Teachers can establish social networking.
 They have to list the course pathways.
 They need to make effective usage of available resources.
 They should mention the clear expectations and establish a supportive community.

IV. Activities (Following the presentation, the students will complete the task. When possible,
provide the professor with the answer key.)

Write an essay about your personal experience of using technology in teaching during this
pandemic. What are the softwares, applications or platforms that have been useful to you in teaching
online classes? (Minimum of 300 words)
