The term National Security must be viewed in its broadest context in that it is more than just
dealing with military threats. It must be viewed as safety from chronic threats and
protection from sudden disruptions in the patterns of daily life. National security involves a
national government working autonomously to protect its citizens from threats.

National Security in the 21st Century will encompass threats ranging from fraud, corruption,
illegal migration, transnational crime. One of the core responsibilities of national security is
identifying potential dangers and readying the right response

National security protects not only citizens but also the economic stability of nation

India has seen crisis after crisis resulting from militancy, insurgency, terrorist attacks,
unsettled border disputes, etc. For Ex, Terrorist attack on Pathankot Airbase (2016), 26/11
Mumbai blasts, Church Street bomb blasts in Bangalore (2015), border disputes with China,
Pakistan, Insurgency in the Northeast, etc. The Pathankot debacle has triggered a serious
debate on the need for a National Security Doctrine.

The immediate requirement is for the Union Government to put together a National
Security Doctrine that should have political consensus, publicly transparent, and should
reflect the complex challenges facing the country. The doctrine must be accompanied by a
national security strategy so that a Pathankot-like situation never happens again.

This period of extreme global volatility can have catastrophic consequences unless a country
has a well- thought-out national security plan that is agile and resilient enough to absorb
mid-course modifications. All state needs to talk about a national security policy for
