UNINTERRUPTIBLE

POWER SUPPLY
U P S
INTRODUCTION
An uninterruptible power supply or uninterruptible
power source (UPS) is an electrical apparatus that
provides emergency power to a load when the input
power source or mains power fails. A UPS differs
from an auxiliary or emergency power system or
standby generator in that it will provide near-
instantaneous protection from input power
interruptions.
These devices or devices provide electrical energy
to equipment known as critical loads, such as
industrial, medical, or computer devices, which, as
mentioned above, always need to have power,
their quality being very important, since they have
the need to be operational at all times and
without any type of failure, such as voltage drops
or spikes.

FUNCTIONING

UPSs are usually connected to the power supply of computers or any

electrical device, allowing them to be used for several minutes in the
event of a power outage, avoiding loss of information and making, as a
complement to the power plant in a power system of backup or
emergency, there are no injuries between the exit of the commercial light
and the ignition of the electric generator.
FUNCTIONING

UPS (SAI) provide electrical power to equipment called critical loads, such as
medical, industrial or computer devices that require permanent and quality power,
to be always operational and without failures (voltage spikes or drops).

The unit of power to configure a UPS is the volt-ampere (VA), which is the
apparent power, or the watt (W), which is the active power, also called effective
or effective power, consumed by the system.
FUNCTIONING

To calculate how much energy a

UPS equipment requires, its
consumption must be known. If
what is known is the effective or
effective power, in watts, the
number of watts is multiplied by
1.4 to take into account the
maximum power peak that the
equipment can reach.
Classifications
These three ratings perform the same function: provide backup
power to safely shut down systems.

They use cheaper technology than Online and this is the main reason why
most people choose them.
UPS Offline / Basic

Optimum UPSs are similar to Offline UPSs, but add protection against
Interactive / Optimal voltage spikes or sudden drops in power. It is usually recommended to
improve the quality of the electrical supply.

UPS Online / Advanced

On the other hand, Online UPS take alternating current from the electrical
network and convert it into direct current, which charges the batteries.

Therefore, UPS have a battery that continues to manifest electricity in

any type of case, such as when an electrical problem is generated in
the infrastructure or a power outage.

When something similar to the above happens, the UPS

will supply power to the device, so that the user or person
has the necessary time to perform their activities.

POWER QUALITY PARAMETERS

The technical parameters of the UPS

power supply are important indicators of
the quality of the UPS and the main basis
for selection. The UPS power supply can
provide clean and uninterrupted power
supply to the load equipment normally and
safely.
1.Input parameters (Input voltage range)

The range of UPS currently designed with

thyristor is -15%, + 10%. If it exceeds this value,
UPS failure rate will increase.
UPS should have automatic protection of three-
phase input phase sequence error and three-
phase lack of phase input.
2.Output parameters

The static stability of output voltage is ± 1% for

medium and large UPS; the transient voltage
fluctuation value of output voltage is less than ±
5% for medium and large UPS; the adjustable
range of output voltage
3.Rated operating parameters (Rated output
power)

Rated maximum output, input current; rated

output input frequency, the standard is 50Hz; the
nominal input and output voltage are determined
according to the way of incoming and outgoing
wires.
4.Other parameters

The mean time between failures is 200,000 to 400,000 hours (large UPS
power supply), 150,000 to 220,000 hours (medium UPS power supply);
Parallel capability requires UPS uninterruptible power supply to have direct
parallel output capability.
The current imbalance is 2% to 5%. The value should be as small as possible.
It should have remote monitoring, fault alarm, and operating status
recording functions; it should have lightning protection, surge suppression,
and antistatic discharge functions.
