Uninterruptible Power Supply

(UPS)
Uninterruptible Power Supply

An uninterruptible power supply or

uninterruptible power source (UPS)
is an electrical apparatus that
provides emergency power to a
load when the input power source
or mains power fails.

What Are the Different Types of UPS Systems
1. Online Double Conversion
2. Offline/Standby/Battery Backup
3. Line-Interactive

All three basic uninterruptible power supply (UPS) technologies have their place in protecting today’s
distributed IT infrastructure especially on the network edge. Each technology has its advantages and each may
be necessary for configuring cost effective power protection, especially in complex systems. Selecting a UPS
for your particular application requires an examination of a number of factors. The load size, location and
criticality of the equipment to be protected are key, as well budgetary considerations, when choosing a UPS
for power backup.

The three major types of UPS system configurations are online double conversion, line-interactive and offline
(also called standby and battery backup). These UPS systems are defined by how power moves through the
unit.
Online UPS takes the incoming AC mains supply and
converts it to DC which feeds the battery and the load via the
inverter. If the mains supply fails, then the batteries feed the
load via the inverter with no interruption to the output
supply at all.
offline UPS is the simplest and least expensive type of UPS, but it
offers limited surge and spike protection. In normal operating mode
these units have two operational circuits: an AC circuit fed directly to
the load and a feed that charges a standby battery via a DC charger.
Line-interactive UPS systems use automatic voltage regulation (AVR) to
correct abnormal voltages without switching to battery. When voltage
crosses a preset low or high threshold value, this type of UPS will detect and
use transformers to boost or lower the voltage by a set amount to return it
to the acceptable range
