04 Symbols of Kings: Establishing Context Worksheet

Part 1: Answer the following questions. Include the URL where you got the information
from and make sure you paraphrase.

1. What does the lion represent? Why would the rulers of England include so many of them on the
Coat of Arms? The lions be the representative for being bravery, royalty, powerful, and courage.
The reason why the rulers of English include so many lions because they want people to
venerate and respect them as a solid unity.

2. What does the fleur-de-lis represent? Why is it featured on the Coat of Arms of British rulers?
The fleur-de-lis mean “flower of the lily” which represents virginity and French royalty. English
kings used this symbol to express their claims to the throne of France.

3. What does the unicorn represent? Why would the rulers of England choose a unicorn to support
their shield?
The unicorn represents for courage and virtue. The rulers of England choose a unicorn because
it represents England and Scotland respectively.

4. The Coat of Arms includes two phrases, “Blessed are the peacemakers” and “Shame to him who
evil thinks.” Choose one of these phrases and explain why a ruler might want it included in a
coat of arms.
“Blessed are the peacemakers.” Rulers would want this phrase engraved into the mind of
citizens. Moreover, rulers want to promote the protection of their country and its citizens; want to
convince volunteers to protect and serve their country. Also peacemakers is balanced to ally
which is nice for Britain.
5. Research one of the colors featured in the Coat of Arms. Based on what the color represents,
explain why it would be used in a royal coat of arms.
Blue color symbolizes as a royalty and sincerity. This is used because royalty and sincerity bind
nations and people together. Moreover, blue is the color which conveys a casual inviting message.

Part 2: Create a shield of your own based on your values and lifestyle:
• Incorporate what you have learned about heraldic colors and symbols to design your shield.
• You can give it a modern twist by including symbols that represent your current interests (a
golden eagle listening to an iPod, for example).

You can use any program you’d like to create your shield, including:

• design software on your computer


• web 2.0 tools
• MS Paint.
• You may draw your shield on paper and attach a photo of it
Part 3: Write a paragraph of at least five sentences (75-100 words) explaining how all of the
elements included (shape, color, and symbols) are representative of your life and your values. Your
paragraph should include proper grammar, punctuation, and other language conventions.

Firstly, I selected a gold color because it means success, achievement, and fortune. The tennis
racket and joystick symbol represent a similar meaning. Those mean relaxing and enjoyment.
Tennis makes me earn some money and games make me relax after playing tennis. Lastly, one of
my favorite mythical creatures is a dragon, which symbolizes strength, power, bravery, and
intelligence. There are two dragons in my coat of arms, which have different meanings. An ice
dragon represents a cold as ice, being calm yet aggressive. Like a fire dragon yet controlled during
my tennis tournament, Fury can create an outstanding achievement.
