Web 2.0 is a series of concepts and ideas that redefine the web as a platform that gives
individuals more control over their data. Social networking, wiki and micro-blogging are some
of the popular Web 2.0 tools. Evaluate their functionalities in relation to multimedia technology
and give example for each the tool.

 Darcy DiNucci invented the term web 2.0 in 1999. Tim O'Reilly and Dale
Dougherty popularized the term later in 2004. According to Tim O'Reilly, " Web 2.0 is
the business revolution in the computer industry caused by the move to the internet as a
platform, and any attempt to understand the rules for success on that new platform ". Web
2.0 can be defined as the evolving trends in the usage of World Wide Web technology
and Web design with the objective of boosting creativity, protecting information sharing,
and enhancing the functionality of the Web 1.0.

Many young people are drawn into the concept of web 2.0 due to its social aspects such
as ease communication, online learning resources, and stress-free sharing data. Web tools
are the most important part of web 2.0. Web tools supports users to create content and
interact with others. Some of the popular web tools are:
 Social networking
 Wiki
 Micro-blogging

1. Social Networking: A social networking is a group of users who share and trade
multimedia content and other resources. It provides a virtual community to
explore places and interact people about different topics. Users creates their
profile page with their personal information and share their content. One can view
someone else profile and like or dislike their content and even post a comment.
Social networking provides usage of multimedia to communicate. Instant
messaging are allowed with text, voice message, video calls and sending images.
Social networking websites gives opportunity to interact globally. We can make
friends around the globe and chat with them. There are many social networking
websites like dating websites, business websites, and friendship websites. Many
teenagers these days are obsessed with social networking websites.
Facebook: It is one the most popular social networking website. These
website are also known as social media. Social media is a set of Internet-based
applications that allow the creation and exchange of user-generated content and
are founded on the 2.0. Facebook is the platform for sharing content and
communicating founded by Mark Zuckerberg in 2004. Facebook allows to react
on friend's content. It also provides a marketplace to buy and sell.
2. Wiki: A wiki is a page or a set of Web pages that allows everyone to access and
contribute or alter the content. Wikis can be used to cover a certain topic or
subject area. Wikis make it simple to search for and view information.
Multimedia components can also be used in wiki such as audio, video and
graphics. Wikis can feature photographs, voice recordings, and films in addition
to text.

Wiki are used in various sector such as education, business and medicine. Wiki in
educations lets user create documents and research contents. With the help of
simple markup language, documents can be written interactively and
progressively on a wiki. Single page on wiki are known as wiki page whereas
collection of wiki pages are known as wiki. It allows any user to modify any page
on the wiki Website or create new pages using only a Web browser. Similarly it
encourages meaningful subject connections between pages by making page link
construction simple and indicating whether or not the desired target page exists.

The first wiki was WikiWikiWeb developed by Ward Cunningham in 1994. In


this time the most popular example of wiki is Wikipedia. Wikipedia is the most
well-known and free internet encyclopedia. It was created by Jimmy Wales and
Larry Sanger in 2001. It is created with collaborative effort of a community.
Wikipedia uses text, images and audio to present a data. Anyone can access the
wiki pages and edit the pages.

3. Micro-blogging: Microblogging is the act of writing short postings for quick


audience responses. Tumblelogs were the earliest microblogging platforms.
Lucky stiff created the term in a blog post on 2005. Microblogging has also
grown in popularity as a means of receiving real-time news updates. People share
their opinions and thoughts. Users also share the things going on in their
surroundings. Various topics are also discussed in micro-blogging.

Twitter: Twitter one of the most popular microblogging services. At the same
time, it is also one of the most widely used social networking platforms.
Twitter was created by Noah Glass, Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams and Biz
Stone in 2006. User can create a profile and post pictures and text that are
short. The character limit in twitter is 280 characters. The posts in twitter is
known as tweets. One can reply to tweets and share them as retweets.
