3. Hank Williams
Hank Williams stands at the top of one of the most famous family trees in country music. His
son Hank Williams Jr. recording this tradition with the songs that were rampant in the 70s
and 80s. Hank Williams is recognized as one of the greatest country artists of all time. Its
intriguing and poetic lyrics have inspired performers from Lucinda Williams to Bob Dylan.
Hank worked as a street performer as a youth before his recording career began. But a
survivalist lifestyle died and was immortalized at the age of 29. “Your Cheating Heart,”
“Lost Highway,” and “I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry” remain indelible entries in the
country's songbooks
Hank Williams' song "borrows heavily" from the 1942 song of the same name written by
Cole Porter. The lyrics for Williams' version begin with the use of double meanings
related to food preparation ("How about cooking something with me?"). In the third and
fourth stanzas, the singer promises the object of affection that they can become an
exclusive couple ("How about staying friends?" and "I'll throw my date book over the
