If you remamber the shock waves caused by the launch of the Horida CB750 back at the ‘end of the 1980s, you may think that Honda ‘originated ine high-revving four-cylinder engine. Not 60, It was Gilera. And it was one of their beautiful four-cylinder 800 ec racers bikes that was first to lap the Isle of Man Mountain Circuit at over 100 mph. The marque dominated the world champions in te first half ofthe 1950s, winning the 600 thle every year from 1960 to 1955 with the single exception of 1851. That was down to the genlus of Geoff Duke and the slow but fine handing single-cylincer Manx _Nerten. However, Duke sav which way racing was going and nioved to Glara. The Brivsh press. accused Duke of treachery but he took the nxt threo world titles, along the way he aad the Gira. became ons of the truly great mar machine combinations in the ents history of racing. The Gilera story starts in 1909 The Gilera story actually starts way back in 1908 when a young mechanic called Giuseppe Gilera started making his own bikes in Milan.
