is the biggest festival of street arts in the world. The Fringe emerged as a sideshow to the Edinburgh International Art Festival that was created just after the Second World War in 1947 with the aim of helping to lift the battered European state of mind.
In 1958, the Festival Fringe Society (FFS)
was established, an organization with the purpose of providing information, setting up a central stand and publicizing the program of shows - which made Fringe better known. The first decision of the FFS at its inauguration was that no artistic veto should be exercised over the shows presented at the festival and the rule is still valid today. Fringe attracts the big names in street shows and covers a variety of artistic expressions, such as theater, cabaret, dance, music, circus, exhibitions and events.
Fringe does not invite and does not
remunerate artists. In 2012, the festival presented 2,100 shows distributed in 265 different locations. Humor occupied the first place with 35% of the programming, in second place, with 28%, came the theatrical production and, with 16%, musical shows. For Edinburgh's Secretary of Culture and External Affairs, Fiona Hyslop, “the Edinburgh Festival, the Fringe, is the most vibrant festival in the world and annually attracts thousands of visitors to the capital of Scotland who return home delighted with the diversity of shows. , creativity of the artists and with the opening to artistic expressions of the world stage of the show”.
The National Dance Company of Siena is
led by Francesca Selva and was founded in 1955. The choreography of the shows is inspired by neoclassical art, but has a strong contemporary influence. With the collaboration of foreign dancers and musicians, it performs this year at Fringe.
