Soft Drinks
By: Jacquez Perez
Soft drinks are always a choice for us, especially when we are growing up. As
teenagers, we have the tendency to guzzle any soft drink we can get our hands on without
thinking of the repercussions it has on our health. The top three favourites will still be the
ever- famous Coca- Cola, followed by Pepsi and F&N drinks. Nevertheless, we have to
consider what is in a soft drink first.
For one, a can of soft drink contains more sugar than an average person should
consume a day. This is keeping in mind that the drink is also diluted with other chemicals
such as colouring and sweeteners. Many evidences have shown that a simple can of our
daily soft drink contains up to nine scoops of sugar. This amount of sugar has been
researched thoroughly and proven by many chemists and physicians of its ill effects on the
human body.
With this at risk, we knowingly commit to these sugary drinks in spite of being
warned about the hazards it contains. The government and many other health
organisations have shown support to detest the production and consumption of sugar. Yet,
these huge conglomerates always turn a deaf ear as the revenue which they reap from the
sales of such products is too high.

ROBOT
Robot comes from the Czech word ‘robota’, meaning ‘forced work or labour’. But today,
robot refers to any man – made machine that can perform work or other actions normally
performed by humans, either automatically or by remote control.
Robots seem like a modern – day invention, but evidence shows that automation was
created for everything from toys to parts for religious ceremonies in ancient Greece and Rome.
Leonardo da Vinci sketched plans for a humanoid robot in the late 1400s. Jacques de Vaucanson
produced a flute- playing automated human figure in the 18th century. Indeed, many automated
inventions were created largely for entertainment purposes.
In 1956, George Devoland Joseph Engelberger founded the world’s first robot company. By
the 1960s, the General Motors automobile plant in New Jersey was using robots to move car
parts around. Robots continued to advance and are now found in homes as toys, vacuums and
programmable pets. They are a part of many aspects of industry, medicine, science, space
exploration, construction, food packaging and are even used to perform surgery. Watson, a robot
with artificial intelligence from IBM, defeated human players in an episode of Jeopardy.
Robots are used because they are often cheaper to use than humans. It is easier for robots
to do some jobs and sometimes the only possible way to accomplish some tasks! They can
explore inside gas tanks and volcanoes and traverse the surface of Mars and other places too
dangerous for humans to go. Furthermore, robots can do the same thing over and over again
without getting bored. They can drill, weld, paint, handle hazardous materials and in some
situations, are much more accurate than a human – which can cut back on production costs,
mistakes or hazards. Robots never get sick, don’t need food and sleep, don’t need to take a day
off and best of all, they don’t ever complain!
Unlike in the films, however, robots are unable to think or make decisions; they are only
tools to help us get things done. They are machines with programmed movements that allow
them to move in certain directions or sequences. Artificial intelligence has given robots more
ability to process information and to ‘learn’. But, they are still limited by the information given
to them and the functions they are required to perform.
