The Rosemary Plant
Rosmarinus officinalis, commonly known as rosemary, is a fragrant evergreen herb native to the
Mediterranean. It has evergreen, needle-like and leaves and whiten pink, purple, or blue flowers. It is used
as a culinary condiment, to make bodily perfumes and for its potential health benefits.
Rosemary is a member of the mint family Lamiaceae, along with many other herbs. The herb not
only tastes good in culinary dishes such as rosemary chicken and lamb, but it is also a good source of iron,
calcium, and vitamin B-6.
It is typically prepared as a whole dried herb or a dried powdered extract, while teas and liquid
extracts are made fresh or using dried leaves.
The herb has been hailed since ancient times for its medical properties. Rosemary was traditionally
used to help alleviate muscle pain, improve memory, and promote hair growth.

There are always new ways to explore places. One way is by participating in a volunteer programme. There
are many volunteer programmes around the world and one increasingly popular programme are aimed at
nature lovers.
One such volunteer programme is to work and live as a volunteer mahout. This unique programme
is offered in Thailand. Volunteers have the chance to participate in projects run in Surin, Chiang Mai and
Pattaya. Volunteers will learn many important skills. The main skills include elephant care and training.
Volunteers will work with rescued animals every day. A typical day includes a lot of waling with the
elephants. Volunteers walk them to and from the jungle and the river where they bathe. There will be plenty
of interaction with the large mammals.
Volunteer programmes such as this lasts between one and four weeks. Suitable participants must be
fit and outgoing. They should be between the ages 18 and 70 years old. It may be a volunteer programme,
but participants must be willing to part with RM2000. This amount may be high, but it covers many things.
Besides food and accommodation, the money helps finance work to help rehabilitate the elephants.
If a long volunteer programme is not for you but you still want to work with the elephants, then try
