POOR EDDIE

In a sunny afternoon, a man passes his office’s main lobby with a name tag in his
neck and a bag on his back. Dressed in dishevelled clothes after work, he crossed the
road with earphones on his ears. He is going home after seven hours of work. His name
is Eddie, Eddie Sunandar. He is the oldest son of Mr. Eka Sunandar, CEO of Sunandars
Group, the biggest property agency in the town. They were living with a lot of wealth.
After Mr. Sunandar passed away about a year ago, their wealth has decreased
dramatically. Mrs. Sunandar had a big serious health problem after Mrs. Sunandar’s
death. She was hospitalised about five months before passed away and it costs a lot of
money. When their parent alive, Eddie and his siblings no need to work hard to clean
the house because they had about fifteen servants to do all the works. But now, they
have to work to get money and to clean the big house regularly since the servants went
out after their mother’s death.

Eddie works as a manager’s assistant in an agency company in Jakarta. He has

been working there for three months. Ms. Putri, the manager, and he is really a good
friend. They have lunch together every day at work. One day, in cloudy midday, they
have lunch together in a small restaurant in front of their office. They order the same
menu as usual. Eddie feels like there is something strange with the manager because the
manager doesn’t talk much as usual. When the food they ordered served, the manager
starts the conversation.

“What happened?” asked the manager, opened the conversation.

“What’s wrong?” replied Eddie.

“You just act not as usual?”

“I’m OK. You also act not as usual.” Eddie added and facing down.

They are silent for a moment. Then, the manager opened the conversation again.

“Die, I want to tell you something.” said the manager, then Eddie looking up to
the manager.
 “I just want to say that, umm, well, it’s really hard to say but thank you very
much for your contributions during the work these past months and I’m really sorry if
during these past months if I made a lot of mistakes that make you feel like
uncomfortable.” The manager added.

Then, Eddie facing down his face again.

“Today is the last day I work here, I assigned to the new branch office in Padang.
Even though by tomorrow we don’t work together as usual, I hope that we still keep in
touch.”

“Yeah” Eddie replied with a quite sad face. “Let’s eat our lunch.” He added with
a little smile.

After that, they don’t have any conversation until they finish the lunch. In work, they
also don’t interact as usual until the end of the day.

Time shows four o’clock in the afternoon, a cloudy afternoon. The office is quite
noisy because of the sound of chairs rubbing against the floor in which the workers tidy
up their own table before getting home, so does with Eddie. After tidy up his table,
Eddie walks to presence machine to scan the barcode on his name tag then he walks out
from the office. He always on foot to get home. He gets home with the same route every
day. After some minutes he walks, the weather turns drizzle so he faster his walks and
he bring out a hoodie from his bag. It is about fifteen minutes more to his get home so
he figures out how to get home faster. So, he decided to through a narrow street that he
usually avoided because of the crowded. He has to walk on that narrow street because it
is getting to raining or he will be wet before he gets home. So, he fastens his walks and
facing down his face on that narrow street because there are many people gathering on
their terrace. After passes that street, he is running to gets home because the weather is
getting worse. Sometimes he walks normally to catch his breath and he continues to run.
Three minutes later, he gets home with his soggy hoodie. He passes his siblings on the
living room watching TV without a word. He brings out the key room in his pocket and
opens the door. Then, he locks the door from inside.

Inside the room, he took a bath and dressing. After that, he comes out of his
room to have dinner. He checks the foods on the table but there is no food there. He
walks to the fridge looking for the food and he only found some eggs there. Then he
cooks omelette and serves it by himself. There is one of his sisters on the kitchen but he
doesn’t say anything to her. They eat on the same table but they just busy with
themselves. After eating, he just left her sister alone in the kitchen and he enters his
room. In his room, Eddie is daydreaming and still speechless about what happened on
that day.

In the next day, he is going to works. He arrives at the office fifteen minutes
before the work starts. While he tidies up the manager’s room, there is an old man
come in with a young lady.

“Good morning Eddie”

“Good morning sir”

“Well, by today Ms. Putri doesn’t work here anymore because she assigned to
the new branch office in Padang. So, this is Ms. Ida, the new manager, Ms. Putri
substitute.”

“Hello Mr. Eddie” Ms. Ida greets Eddie with a handshake. Eddie just replied with
a big smile on his face.

“Well, I hope you both can work together as a team to make this company more
progressive. Good luck.” Said Mr. Andi, the president of the company. After that Eddie
and Ms. Ida bow when Mr. Andi leave them in the manager’s room.

As time went by, Eddie falls in love with the manager but he afraid to tell the
manager if he likes her and so with the manager. Until one day, when he and Ms Ida in
the same elevator to get home after work, Eddie dares himself to tell the manager the
truth.

“Miss Ida, umm, may I tell you something?” asked Eddie shyly.

“What is it Eddie?’ Ms. Ida replied.

“Umm, you know what Ms. Ida” Eddie start to serious, so does with Ms. Ida.

“I’ve felt something like unusual with you”

“Huh, what is that?”

Then the elevator door is open, their conversation pauses because there is a worker
come in. After that worker come out, Eddie starts the conversation again.

“Umm, since the first time I met you, I feel like, I-I, I just in love with you, I don’t
even know why so.” They in silent for a while, then Ms. Ida continue the conversation.

“Umm, you know what Eddie, I just felt the same with you.”

“Oh really?” Eddie asked curiously.

“Yeah” Ms Ida replied and nodded.

“So, would you like to have a relationship not just as my partner in work?” Once
again Eddie asked curiously.

“Eddie,” Ms. Ida replied, “I don’t mean to broke your heart but a week ago I’ve
dated with someone.” She added.

“Oh, OK. That’s OK with me.” Eddie replied awkwardly.

Then, the elevator door is open. Eddie and Ms. Ida come out from the elevator
and separated in the office main lobby. Along the way to home, Eddie's feelings were
frivolous. He was relieved to have dared to say his feelings to Ida but on the other side,
he was very disappointed with himself. Arriving home, he shouted as loud as possible.
He felt that the world was never on his side.
