SURVEY DATA

BRIEF
1. The objective is to collect data from migrants coming from organizations from various
sectors (Public, Private, Civil and/or in our close circle) and to analyze the reasons and
challenges faced.

2. A survey questionnaire is made, that includes questions regarding socio-cultural, economic


and physical factors.

3. The survey was conducted in the means of a google form that was sent out to the
prospective migrants.

4. The questions were asked through a phone call and the responses were filled up by us.

5. The collective responses helped us come up with infographics that analyzed the variations in
each of the migrants life

1. AGE GROUP
Inference:

Most of the migrants are aged 21-35 (55.6%), reason being that they
migrated to work, to have a better lifestyle etc.

The rest of the migrants also migrated in their twenties, and decided to
continue working in the same place / migrated to another place for a
better lifestyle.

2. GENDER

Inference:
Most of the migrants are male, they usually migrate for work so that
they can provide for their family back home, they usually work as
manual labourers in construction, security guards, etc.
The few females that do migrate usually work as househelp, cooks,or
helpers in salons,etc.

3. EDUCATION Inference:
The people who migrated for labor work, migrated before completing
their education.
Earning money was more prioritized as compared to getting more
education.

1/10 migrants migrated for education.


1/10 migrants migrated for work related to educational qualifications.

4. MARITAL STATUS

Inference:
Most of the migrants are married and migrated into the city to earn and
provide financial support for their family in the home town.

1/10 migrants migrated with family

5. ISSUES RELATED TO LANGUAGE Inference:


Most migrants spoke native languages and picked up
other languages as they migrated. The common languages
spoken were English, Hindi and Kannada. Migrants found it
difficult to reach out due to issues with language.

6. REASON FOR MIGRATION

Inference:
Almost all of the migrants migrated for work (House help, Saloon
worker, cook, driver, laborer, private employed worker etc)

Only 1/10 migrants migrated for education (to pursue Masters)

7. CHOICE OF CITY
Inference:
Most of the migrants chose their particular city for their convenience of
work and better living opportunities. Very few chose their destination
for the proximity.

8. MULTIPLE JOBS (?), NO. OF HOURS WORKED


Inference:
Most of them worked 1 job and upto 8 hours a day.

3/10 worked 2 jobs that forced them to work for >10


hours.

9. CURRENT OCCUPATION AND NATURE OF WORK Inference:


Most of the migrants prefer to work in
private companies (small scale
companies for people who don't have
good educational background) which
are more open to migrants

10. KIND OF LIVING
Inference:
Majority of migrants live in mixed
communities, there are a few who live
with other coworkers to split the rent.
Most of the migrants chose an area which
is close to work or daily amenities

11. HOW OFTEN DO THEY TRAVEL BACK HOME AND HOW


Inference:
Most of them travel back home
once in 6 months, and Bus is the
most commonly used
transportation.

The rest use private cars/vans or


flights (2/10).

12. CURRENT OCCUPATION AND NATURE OF WORK


Inference:
Most of the migrants prefer to work for
full time in private companies (small
scale companies for people who don't
have good educational background)
which are more open to migrants for
construction work

13. MONTHLY INCOME
Inference:
Most of the migrants earn Rs. 10000- Rs. 30000 per month and
only and very few of them earn from Rs. 1000- Rs. 5000.

14. INCREMENTS

Inference:
Most of the migrants receive 5- 10% increment and the rest below
5%.

Increment is almost majorly dependant on how their relationship

Inference:
Most of the migrants choose to live
close to the workplace so the can go by
walk and save money.

16. HOSPITAL/ HEALTH CHECKUPS
Inference:
Most of the migrants visit the
hospital only when needed or once
a year, as they consider it a heavy
expense to have frequent visits or
health checkups

17. SOURCE OF CLEAN WATER

Inference:
Most of the migrants get clean water from piped
household connections and only 12.5% of the migrants
get clean water from public standpipe and borehole.

18. FREQUENCY OF CLEAN WATER

Inference:
Most (87.5%) of the migrants get clean water everyday and
very few of them get clean water on alternate days.

19. AWARENESS OF ORGANIZATIONS, NGOS, ETC

Inference:
Most migrants mentioned they were unaware of any organisations. They
often found it difficult to reach out or register as they mentioned it was
unreliable.

20. BASIC NEEDS DURING PANDEMIC

Inference:
Most migrants relied upon their savings for the
rest of the pandemic. Some mentioned that they
were secured by private employees and the rest
were on paid leave.

21. LOANS
Inference:
Most migrants have taken loans for educational
purpose for their children and to buy basic
equipments like a phone, tv etc.

CONCLUSION
● As far as living experiences go, there are mixed opinions.
Some of them prefer to live in the destination area because of a better lifestyle and job opportunity while at the
same time some of them would rather earn and save money for few more years and then go back to their
hometown to their families.

● Given the opportunities in the city, the migrants would rather start their own small scale business/ industry
rather than being an employee.

● Overall, from the collected data, the migrants were satisfied with their decision to migrate. The migrants found
it beneficial from experiencing different cities and often found it challenging and life-changing in regards with
culture, language, growth, well-being and in their finances.

● Out of the data collected, we can say some of the migrants have had common experiences in this process. They
have gone through various ups and downs to settle themselves into the destination area.
