Why did the Spaniards brand us as indolent?

The reason the Spanish labeled us as being indolent is the Philippines' climate, which is close to a tropical
region with hot temperatures that might cause people to not accomplish the labor they've put in. Just as a
cold climate encourages work and action, a hot temperature demands individual stillness and relaxation.
We also need cohesion because, without it, the populace cannot fight. Because it is an archipelago, the
Philippines is divided into three primary geographical regions: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Dr. Jose
Rizal asserts that there were deeper-rooted factors that contributed to the collapse of the Philippines,
including abuse and prejudice, inactivity by the government, widespread corruption, inaccurate church
beliefs, and bad examples from some Spanish people who led sluggish lives.
How did Rizal and the other Filipino scholars defend the Filipinos against this labeling from Spain?
Why?
He defends Filipinos by asserting that they are not inherently lazy and that they have long engaged in
economic activities like farming and trade before the arrival of the Spaniards. However, indolence has
deeper roots, including abuse and discrimination, government inaction, systemic corruption, red tape,
false religious beliefs, and poor examples from some lazy Spaniards who have contributed to the
degradation of Filipino values. The major causes of indolence, according to Rizal, are the absence of
national sentiment and unity among Filipino natives, as well as the poor training and education they
acquired. Rizal thought that freedom and education might heal the laziness of the Filipinos. We shouldn't
condemn someone, especially if we don't understand their culture.
