II. Essay:

1. Explain the importance of measurements in experimental sciences. Measurement plays an

important role, and when possible the scientist attempts to test his theories by carefully
designed and controlled experiments that will yield quantitative rather than qualitative results.

2. Compare and contrast:

1. Pure substance and solution
A substance is matter that has a uniform and definite composition: either an element or a
compound. A solution is a homogeneous mixture; consists of solutes dissolved in a
solvent. Therefore, both are similar in that their compositions are uniform throughout.
2. Element and compound
An element is a pure chemical substance made of same type of atom. Compounds
contain different elements in a fixed ratio arranged in a defined manner through chemical
bonds.
3. Compound and mixture
A compound contains atoms of different elements chemically combined together in a
fixed ratio. A mixture is a combination of two or more substances where there is no
chemical combination or reaction.
