Project description
(Please specify 1) the general context of the project and problem the project will address, 2) the target

objectives/outcomes of the project, 4) project implementation, detailed description and timeline of
planned activities, 6) expected results of each objective 7) coordination and synergies with other
projects and actors)

1.The problem the project will address.

I was raised in the informal settlements of Kenya where most of children and women knows that
depression and suicidal thoughts are caused by evil spirits, hence they seek solutions through witch
doctors whose main method of treatment is traditional rituals, which does not offer substantive
solution, but rather escalate the situation. This in turn creates animosity and disunity in communities
across the country. And thus, consequently leading to experiences of violence, loss ,discrimination,
relationship break-up and financial problems. The strongest risk factor for suicide is a previous suicide
attempt. The goal of our project is to reduce factors that increase risk and increase factors that
promote resilience .

2.The target group and project beneficiaries.

The project focuses on depression and suicide prevention among children and young women between
age 14-35 years in Kisumu County from vulnerable communities. The project will benefit 100 children
and 100 young women with depression and suicidal thoughts. We shall form support groups with the
participants who have successfully completed our therapy sessions to support others in the
community.

6.Coordination and Synergies with other Projects and Actors

Boresha Initiative has ensured smooth running of our activities through proper coordination. This has
enabled us to partner with other organizations and actors to promote growth and development to our
community members. We encourage our members to embrace teamwork and assertive
communication to promote peace and harmony among the members.

Mainstreaming of cross-cutting themes: a) gender equality, b) environment and climate
(Please describe how both cross-cutting themes are integrated into the project)

Children and young women suffer from depression in silence according to World Health Organization.
We believe that mental health awareness on depression and suicidal prevention can be a great enabler
for young women economic and social empowerment, but lack of awareness and stigma on mental
health is one of the main limiting factor. Afya Bora provides a society where children and young women
talk about their mental health issues without fear of discrimination. Our organization is keen on
promoting awareness on depression and suicidal among children and young women and empower
them to develop environmental friendly solutions to address climate change. This promotes economic
empowerment as children focus on their academics and young women focus on their jobs as they will
have interest in doing things.

Sustainability and long-term impact

(Please describe how the project will continue and sustain itself, identify risks and opportunities,

Afya Bora has reduced the number of children and young women committing suicide by 80% this we
have achieved through depression awareness program and suicidal prevention techniques we also treat
100 children and 100 women diagnosed with depression disorder. This project has widened the
support system of children and young women hence improved social skills and academic performance
