A study of an amalgamation of inherited burdens and culture produced limitations that mould

contemporary establishments and create societal fissures.

Look around you, has the place where you lived all your life looked the same? Is your neighbourhood viewed
as ‘better’? Do you know of any other such localities in your city? More importantly, were they always like
this? And if not, then what changed?
This intersectional analysis drives you to answer these questions about a particular region in your city. It
explores the intersection between people, their culture, the institutions governing them among other factors
becoming the primary reason behind the accelerated growth of certain regions in comparison to others.
Our aim is to address developmental issues in the cities we live in, the society we are going to inherit and
the institutions we constitute.

This round has been divided into two segments- a report and a presentation. For the report, participants
are required to compile their findings on an area of their choice and inspect its present conditions,
providing valid and relevant reasons behind its current state, elucidating upon the various factors unique to
that region that made it what it is.

1) We encourage participants to go to the locality they have chosen and conduct an on-field analysis
delving into their underlying functionality. Here, locality has been defined as a place where the intersection
of the four elements mentioned below are abundantly clear to you.

2) The participants are encouraged to ask questions, interview people and learn more about their
localities during their on field visit and incorporate it into their presentations. They are required to provide an
appendix to both their primary and secondary research.

3) The participants can conduct their analysis in a time series format where they will evaluate the
intersectionality over a defined period of time, exploring its evolution or the study could be a comparison to
a neighbouring locality, which your chosen locality has an obvious divergence with. The analysis does not
have to be limited to either of these and can be conducted in any format.

4) We have added possible points of exploration:

A. Social Resilience
Examine the diversity and heritage behind the culture.
The degree of variation in the basic housing facilities provided to the population.
Changes in sex ratio over time and across strata.
Effectiveness of social security schemes in the area.
How active are the NGOs and civil society organizations.
Exploring the presence of industries (and types of industries) in the area.

B. Economic Resilience
Explore aspects of formal and informal employment.
Inspect the availability of network providers, their accessibility and number of people who have access
to the internet.
Prevalence and availability of basic necessities.

C. Environmental Resilience
Understanding the direct and indirect impact of environmental changes on the residents in the said
locality.
Environmental degradation in terms of worsening air quality and its health implications

Availability of banking facilities.
The efficiency of bureaucratic processes : Presence of red-tapism.
Adequacy of Safety Measures in the locality.
Provision of uninterrupted supply of water and electricity.

5) The underlying anxieties of caste, class and gender could be explored across all segments of your
analysis with the due respect and empathy to the community residing deserves and expects.

6) Once you and your teammate have decided on the locality – please send an email to
youthconference.ejcon@gmail.com clearly stating the city and locality. This is for us to keep a track
and avoid repetitions of localities.
