MARACA - sometimes called shaker or chac-chac, is a


rattle which appears in many genres of Caribbean and
Latin Music. It is shaken by a handle and usually played
as part of a pair.

MARACA INSTRUMENT CLASSIFICATION - maracas


belong to the idiophone group, which consists of musical
instruments that create sound by vibration without
using strings, air, or membranes. Unlike idiophones that
produce sound when struck ( such as castanets, cymbals
and xylophones), maracas belong to a subcategory of
shaken idiophones.

WHAT COUNTRY IS KNOWN FOR MARACAS? - maracas


are thought to have originated in Brazil, Columbia,
Puerto Rico, and West Africa and have long been used
in the musical traditions of these cultures including
ceremonies, festivals and celebrations.
TODAY MARACAS ARE MADE OUT OF MANY DIFFERENT
MATERIALS - you can find wood maracas, fiber maracas,
raw hide maracas, and plastic maracas.

WHAT TYPE OF INSTRUMENTS IS MARCAS? - The


maracas is a Percussion instrument usually played in
pairs, one in each hand by holding it from the edges so
as not inhibit the vibration of the shell.
