LESSON

The benefits of physical activities and exercise are important across the
lifespan. It promotes healthy lifestyle and improves fitness level. Also, it
strengthens our immune system. It can be an effective treatment strategy for
symptoms like depression and anxiety especially in this time of pandemic.
In this present situation, we need to be aware of the proper etiquette,
guidelines and safety protocols for the safety of everyone. Etiquette refers to
respect. Respect for the equipment, yourself, and others who are using the venue.
A guideline is a statement which determines a course of action. Safety is the
condition of being safe from undergoing or causing hurt, injury, or loss.

Engaging in physical activities and exercises, we are using different

equipment and facilities that help to be more enjoyable and effective. In order to
ensure safety and as a courtesy to other who also use the equipment and venues,
we need to observe some etiquettes and guidelines.

The use of different exercise equipment can motivate and help you to achieve
your fitness goal. As a courtesy to other individuals who also make use of the
equipment, you need to observe the following proper etiquettes:

1. Sanitized the equipment by spraying alcohol before and after use.

2. Return equipment to its proper place.
3. Do not slam or drop weights.
4. Wipe off drinks and sweat off equipment and floor.
5. Minimize grunting, refrain from yelling and using profanity.

Wherever we do our physical activity or exercise, there are proper etiquettes

and guidelines that we need to abide for our safety. Here are some of the general
guidelines:

1. Check Yourself. Do not force yourself to engage in physical activity if you

are feeling sick.
2. Warm-up first. Before doing complex or difficult movements, we have to
condition our body by doing simple movement.
3. Practice proper hygiene and care. Take a bath or use deodorant if needed.
4. Dress appropriately. Wear comfortable clothes. For boys, avoid exercising
shirtless because it spreads sweat and germs and for girls, avoid wearing
dress that can distract others.
5. Keep hydrated. Drink water before, during and after exercise to prevent
dehydration. Choose water over sugary beverages.
6. Keep ventilated.
7. Bring a towel. Use towel in wiping your sweat.
8. Keep the music to yourself. Lower down the volume or when listening music
using your earphones, avoid singing aloud.
9. Keep the place clean. During and after exercise, keep the surrounding free
from any obstructions.
10. Practice good form first. It is better to perform simple movements with
proper form than complex movement with improper execution.
11. Be nice, as a general rule!
In this public health emergency crisis, the government issued minimum
public health standards for the protection of everyone in COVID-19. Minimum
Public Health Standards refer to guidelines set by DOH to aid all sectors in
settings to implement non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPI), which refers to
public health measures that do not involve vaccines, medications or other
pharmaceutical interventions, which individuals and communities can carry out in
order to reduce transmission rates, contact rates, and the duration of
infectiousness of the individuals in the population to mitigate COVID-19. Here are
some of the minimum public health standards to be observed:

1. Physical or social distancing.

2. Wearing of face mask and face shield
3. Frequent hand washing
4. Use of alcohol or sanitizer

Here are some suggestions to promote physical activities in this time of

physical distancing and isolation:

1. Do exercises or physical activities outdoor wherever possible and perform

your choice of low-to-moderate intensity activity. Outdoor activities can
eliminate boredom and also serve as a stress reliever but you must follow
the guidelines set by the authorities to ensure safety for everyone.
2. Do not socialize or play group sports with people outside your household.
Maintain a distance of 1-2 meter radius from others to prevent the risks of
virus transmission that can occur when socializing in groups.
3. Avoid holding outdoor equipment especially metal and plastic since they
provide a surface for virus transmission.
4. Engage in a variety of exercises at home like climbing stairs, skipping,
hopping and jumping. You can also perform strengthening exercises like sit-
up, push-up, planking and the likes.
5. Do incorporate stretching and breathing deeply each day. Take at least 10
minutes each day to slowly move arms and legs throughout their range of
motion comfortably

In this time of pandemic, physical activities are important to strengthen our

immunity but it is also important to observe proper etiquettes and guidelines
especially in public places to avoid virus from spreading and to ensure safety of
everyone.
