Summary of today's meeting (Reading):

-> Main skill: SPEED READING

a) skimming: general idea of the text in 2-3 min (structure, paragraphs, keywords - UNDERLINE) &

b) scanning: simply locating info quickly -> no relation to your comprehension of the passage

-> Main advice: Don't try to understand the full passage.

Your task is only to locate answers. Most questions test your ability to LOCATE SPECIFIC INFO & then
COMPREHEND the sentence(s) WHICH CONTAIN THAT INFO.

(exception: 2 out of the 14 task types - Match Headings & Choose a Title. We’ll look into those @the
next Reading-focused meeting)

-> KEY WORDS.

Each question will have key words to help you:

a) locate the info, &

b) spot the right answer.

Practice spotting key words - sometimes they are paraphrased for extra difficulty – and relating
them logically to the question. When you finish & check with the answer key, focus on this:

"Did I manage to identify the key words?”

”Did I understand how they relate to the answer?"

Examples of "easy" key words: names, dates, numbers, places -> others are more subtle ("A -
completely- replaced B" => 100%, NOT 99% or 50% or 10%) -> as you can see, this aspect is strongly
related to the scanning skill.

-> (extra advice) Trouble with Vocab?

Too academic, or simply unfamiliar?

Then NOTE IT DOWN after you finish. Google the words/structures (and/or ask me!).

That's how you develop! ^_^

Homework: Check the link. Text is on page 2 – please read the TEXT FIRST - THEN the QUESTIONS.
