Characteristics and Properties of Sound

Frequency

Sometimes referred to as pitch, is a number

of times per second that a sound pressure wave

repeats itself.

Wavelength

Is the distance between adjacent identical

parts of wave.

Amplitude

Defined as the loudness or the amount of

maximum displacement of vibrating particles of

the medium from their mean position when the

sound is produced.

Speed

Is the distance travelled per unit of time

by sound wave as it propagates through an

elastic medium.

Period
The time required for one wavelength

to pass a certain point. Generally, a longer period

indicates a lower pitch.

Pitch

Is how high or low the sound is. A high sound

has a high pitch and a low sound has a low pitch.

Characteristics and Properties of light

Color

One of the end of the spectrum is red light,

with the longest wavelength. Blue or violet has the

shortest wavelength. White light is the combination

of all colors in the color spectrum. It has all the colors

of the rainbow.

Intensity

A radiometric quantity measured in watts per

Steradian.
