What comes to your mind when you hear the word PWD? Well, most of the people perceive it as
those people who have a long term impairment in terms of their physiological or psychological
characteristics. It is known as “Persons with disabilities”. As day goes by, we can see how progressed
the things likely to be concerning the PWDs. PWDs as being disabled at some part they are, most of
their families hire some caregivers to take extra care for them. Caregiving is said to be one of the
tough jobs as it requires a lot of patience and good at giving care to people who need it. This led to
the formulation of some benefits that may at least take their tiredness and the challenges they face
away. In the Philippines, a law that is making tax exemption and discounts on some specific
purchases by the PWDs also now covers the granting of income tax deduction to those who give
care for them. This pertains to benefits to be acquired by those who take care of PWDs as well. So
what’s the point there? As someone who also takes care of the PWDs should be recognized as well
as should be included in some benefits given to the PWDs. This benefit which focuses on the
deduction of the income tax returns of these said “PWD caregivers” can have it from the provision of
the signed act by former President Aquino last March 23, in the year 2017 which is the RA 20754.This
law included a Recto bill assigning the PWD the status of dependent for income tax uses. The
deduction reaches P25,000 as a deduction annually. To sum it up, the general benefits of the PWDs
and their caregivers mostly focused on their exemption to income tax returns as well as they receive
some reduction on some certain purchases they make like what has mentioned above and coverage
under some development agencies and life insurances. This generally favors the PWDs and the
caregivers especially the one who take care of the PWDs for their patience, hardwork and dedication
despite the challenges faced.
