1. Conductors in everyday life, water fillers (kettles) made of iron are heated on the stove to
produce hot water. Zinc tile houses to protect the foundation of the roof of the house,
neon lights that are often turned on will cause excessive heat.
2. The material selection process for shape-memory polymers (SMPs). When selecting
SMPs, additional properties need to be considered, so two case studies are given as
examples. Current SMPs are grouped based on their polymer structure or physical
structure (composite, foam, fiber) to accelerate the material selection process for SMPs.
The thermomechanical properties and shape-memory properties have been tabulated for
acrylics, polyurethanes, epoxies, and other SMPs. For each type of SMP, their chemical
structure, synthesis, properties, and performance are discussed. The properties of
commercially available SMPs are also presented and discussed.
3. Microwaves are useful for heating objects by giving microwave radiation to the object.
This tool is called a microwave oven. Objects that are in a microwave oven will be
exposed to microwave radiation and then become hot in a short time. The advantage is
that cooking can be done quickly and without fire.
4. 1 Farad = 1 Coulomb/Volt
For example, a capacitor component has a value of 2 Farads, meaning that the capacitor
can or is capable of storing an electric current charge of +2 Coulomb on one conductor
plate and -2 Coulomb on the other conductor plate.
This means that the two conductor plates have a potential difference of 1 Volt. If a
battery has a storage capacity of 12 Volts, then it is connected to the capacitor, then one
of the conductor plates has an electrical charge of Q = C.V = (2). (12 Volts) =+24
Coulombs.
Meanwhile, the other side of the conductor plate has a charge of -24 Coulomb, which is
the opposite charge from positive.

5. Can convert batteries into electric cars. Prof. Zaki added that the battery is a key
component for electric vehicles and contributes about 35-40% of the current price of
electric cars. The biggest cost component for the manufacture of electric car batteries is
the material cost which reaches approximately 60% of the total cost of making batteries.

“Electric cars use lithium ion batteries with lithium nickel, cobalt, manganese and
aluminum used as the raw material for the cathode and graphite as the anode material.
The cathode material gives the highest contribution to the price of lithium battery cells,
which is around +-34%," he explained. He estimates that sales of electric cars in the
world will continue to increase to +-55%, by 2040 around 48% of them will be battery-
based electric cars.”

6. -Bones: Broken bones can be mended with shape memory alloys. The alloy plate has a
memory transfer temperature that is close to body temperature, and is attached to both
ends of the broken bone. From body heat, the plate wants to contract and retain its
original shape, therefore exerting a compression force on the broken bone at the place of
fracture. After the bone has healed, the plate continues exerting the compressive force,
and aids in strengthening during rehabilitation. Memory metals also apply to hip
replacements, considering the high level of super-elasticity. The photo above shows a hip
replacement.

-Helicopter blades: Performance for helicopter blades depend on vibrations; with memory
metals in micro processing control tabs for the trailing ends of the blades, pilots can fly
with increased precision.

-Eyeglass Frames: In certain commercials, eyeglass companies demonstrate eyeglass

frames that can be bent back and forth, and retain their shape. These frames are made
from memory metals as well, and demonstrate super-elasticity.
