Your patient is a 21 year old presenting with head trauma d/t an automobile
accident in the neuro ICU. The patient's family asks about organ donation and wants
to know how brain death determination is made. The nurse explains the patient is
considered brain dead when:

1) The patient is flaccid and unresponsive


B) CPR is ineffective in restoring heartbeat
C) The patient is apneic and without brainstem reflexes
D) There are no visible respirations and no apical pulse can be auscultated
1) Recent malignancy (excluding skin cancer)
2) Active/chronic infections
3) Irreversible disease
Examples: inoperable cardiac disease, chronic lung disease, severe peripheral
vascular disease
4) Morbid obesity: BMI >35
5) Current substance abuse
6) Inability to consent
7) History of poor adherence
Transplant Recipient Contraindications (7)
1) Recent malignancy (i.e., cancer excluding skin cancer)
2) Active/chronic infections
3) Irreversible disease
