5th Article: Descended into hell, the third day He rose again from the Dead
The hell Jesus descended into was not the hell of the damned, where Jews and
Christians believe the devil and his demons reside. Hell was merely a word
(hades) that Jews and early Christians used to describe the place of the dead.
Instead, hell-fire of the devil is compared to a low area outside the city of
Jerusalem where thrash was thrown and burnt, and so, where fire was never
extinguished.
Third day, first of all, means that Jesus really died. Some people speak of resuscitation – like Jairus’
daughter who just died of the son of the widow Naim whom they were about to bury. But, third day
means, above all, that the glory of God that was shown at Mount Sinai when Moses received His
commandments – manifestation of His will -is now replaced with the glory of the resurrection of His
Son from the dead.
In the Mass, after the Consecration, we used to proclaim the mystery of faith as “Crist Hs died, Christ
has risen, Christ will come again”. Jesus’ death and resurrection is the core of the Apostolic faith.
6th Article: Ascended into heaven and is seated at the Right hand of the Father
This belief of the Apostles states that, for the second Person of the Holy Trinity, the human and divine
natures, united in the Incarnation, could never be separated. Jesus did not dump his human body
as if he needed it only for a time. It also now teachers us that importance must be given by Christian
for whatever is human – or earthly; it has its proper significance and value in the Divine Plan of
Salvation.
The Apostles believe that Jesus is truly divine because God the Father gave him the sole and unique
position to share the fullness of the almighty power.
7th Article: From there He will come again to judge the living and the Dead
The apostles handed over to their successors what Jesus promised. Our faith holds that the mystery
of the future is marked with the certainty that God fulfills always His word.
The Second of Christ at the end ‘of the world is called Judgement Day. It simply tells us that we are
all accountable to God His Son, Jesus Christ. No one else is lord among us.

Discussion
This part reminds the believer that God exists in three persons — the Holy Trinity — God the
Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. What’s referred to as the Force in the movie Star
Wars isn’t the same as the Holy Spirit, who is a distinct person equal to the other two — God
the Father and God the Son.
The Trinity
God, the creator and sustainer of the universe, reveals Himself in the Bible. The Bible clearly
tells us there is only one God. “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one”
(Deuteronomy 6:4). At the same time, time and again we encounter passages in the Bible that
show the one God consists of more persons. This is hard for us to understand. We should
realize that is not because of a logical contradiction. But because of our limitations. That the
complexity and beauty of God’s being surpasses our understanding is not strange. He is God
and we are man.
Plurality in God
When we take the passages that are talking about a plurality in God together, we see there are
actually three persons. God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. This is what we
call the Trinity. The term Trinity is not used in the Bible. But the concept is clearly there. It means
one God in three persons.
In the Old Testament there are various verses that distinguish between God the Father and
God the Son. A clear example is Psalm 110:1, where David says: “The LORD says to my Lord…”
Since David as king did not have any earthly lord, he must refer here to a heavenly Lord who
is distinct from the LORD. Jesus confirms this when He claims this verse is about Him. And
implies that He is the Son of God (Matthew 22:41-45).
In other verses a distinction is made between the Lord and His Spirit. For example, Isaiah 48:16.
“And now the Lord GOD has sent me, and His Spirit.” It is obvious that someone cannot be
thought of apart from His spirit. Yet a distinction is made. Already in the Old Testament we find
verses that point us towards God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. So God
the Son did not come into existence with the birth of Jesus Christ. He is eternal, just like the
Father and the Spirit. But in Jesus He became flesh.
New Testament
The New Testament makes this all much clearer. Many verses teach us about the divinity of
God the Father. One example is 1 Corinthians 4:8. “For us there is one God, the Father, from
whom are all things.” Many verses teach us about the divinity of God the Son. One example is
Titus 2:13: “…the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ.” Many verses
teach us about the divinity of God the Holy Spirit. And one example is 1 Corinthians 6:11: “You
were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”
In several places in the New Testament the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are mentioned
next to each other. In a way that leaves no doubt that they are equal and equally God. These
include:
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations. Baptizing them in the name of the Father and
of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19).
“This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. Being therefore exalted at the right
hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit. He has poured
out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing” (Acts 2:32-33).
“The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit
be with you all” (2 Corinthians 13:14). “…according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in
the sanctification of the Spirit. For obedience to Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 1:2).
Christ pardons the sins of His people not on the basic of anything they did but by His free grace.
The Westminster Confession of Faith states this well.
Repentance and Faith are gifts from God. When God gives His people repentance, they see
themselves as sinners. Because they see themselves as sinners, they will forgive others.
Forgiveness is an indispensable and necessary part of the Christian life. Those who forgive are
forgiven. Those who do not forgive, cannot claim to be forgiven. Just because we are forgiven,
it does not mean we do not pay for our sins in society.
The forgiveness of sins is only accomplished by Christ’s death on the cross. The penalty of sin
according to the law, requires the transgressor of the law to be killed. The sinner’s death penalty
was paid by Christ’s death on the cross. While we were dead in sin, Christ died for us, forgave
us of our sin, and made us able to repent and believe in Him. Repentance is the change of
mind about ourselves. It’s acknowledging that we cannot change ourselves, remove our sin, or
stop sinning. Repentance is a gift from God and cannot be faked or learned by studying.
Repentance is “granted,” “given,” or “bestowed upon” God’s people.
Only the person who mourns over their sin, knows they are a sinner, and publicly admits that
they are a sinner can have forgiveness. Luke stated this in his gospel account.
And He also told this parable to certain ones who trusted in themselves that they were
righteous and viewed others with contempt: “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a
Pharisee, and the other a tax-gatherer. “The Pharisee stood and was praying thus to himself,
‘God, I thank Thee that I am not like other people: swindlers, unjust, adulterers, or even like
this tax-gatherer. ‘I fast twice a week; I pay tithes of all that I get.’ “But the tax-gatherer,
standing some distance away, was even unwilling to lift up his eyes to heaven, but was
beating his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, the sinner!’ “I tell you, this man went down
to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself shall be humbled,
but he who humbles himself shall be exalted.” (Luk 18:9-14)
This does not mean confessing our sins saves us; but, the one who has forgiveness will confess
their sins. The truth must be within the sinner in the first place in order for them to confess.
Those who know they are sinners and that God forgave them will forgive others as well.
From the Catholic perspective, a human being is a union of body and soul, so death is just the
momentary separation of body and soul until the end of the world, the Second Coming of Christ,
the General Judgment, and the resurrection of the dead. The just go, body and soul, into
heaven, and the damned go, body and soul, into hell.
Knowing that He who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and will present us
with you. (2Co 4:14 )
The clearest teaching on the resurrection was by Paul in 1st Corinthians chapter 15. Paul
makes it very clear that, the dead are raised as a spiritual body, the body is imperishable, that
flesh cannot inherit the Kingdom of God, the dead do not sleep, and that at death we are raised
from the dead. Not only do believers get raised from the dead, unbelievers as well will be raised.
Consider and answer me, O LORD, my God; Enlighten my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death,
(Psa 13:3 See also Dan 12:2; Psa 90:5)
Jesus referred to death as sleep.
This He said, and after that He said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I go,
that I may awaken him out of sleep.” The disciples therefore said to Him, “Lord, if he has fallen
asleep, he will recover.” Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that He was
speaking of literal sleep. Then Jesus therefore said to them plainly, “Lazarus is dead,
(Joh 11:11-14 NAS See also Luk 8:52; Mat 9:24; Mat 27:51-53)
Paul makes it clear that, at death, people do not sleep; but, are raised from death.
Behold, I tell you a mystery; we shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,
(1Co 15:51 )
Simply put, while our body does die, we will not remain dead.
then the dust will return to the earth as it was, and the spirit will return to God who gave it.
(Ecc 12:7 NAS See also Gen 3:19; Psa 104:29; Psa 146:4)
“And as for the fact that He raised Him up from the dead, no more to return to decay, He has
spoken in this way: ‘I will give you the holy and sure blessings of David.’ “Therefore He also
says in another Psalm, ‘Thou wilt not allow Thy Holy One to undergo decay.’ “For David, after
he had served the purpose of God in his own generation, fell asleep, and was laid among his
fathers, and underwent decay; but He whom God raised did not undergo decay.
(Act 13:34-37)
Eternal life is a promise from God to His people who believe and have faith in Him. Those who
do not have faith and do not believe in Christ will suffer everlasting destruction. This is a definite
and clear teaching in the Bible.
The Old and New Testament both teach that all humanity will either be raised to eternal life or
eternal corruption.
“And many of those who sleep in the dust of the ground will awake, these to
everlasting life, but the others to disgrace and everlasting contempt.”
(Dan 12:2 )
“But when the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He
will sit on His glorious throne. “And all the nations will be gathered before Him; and
He will separate them from one another, as the shepherd separates the sheep
from the goats; and He will put the sheep on His right, and the goats on the left.”
(Mat 25:31-33 )
“Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed of My
Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.. . . ”
“Then He will also say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into
the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels;. . .”
“And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”
(Mat 25:34, 41, 46 )
Eternal life is a promise from God. It is not some “dangling carrot” to get people to obey Him. It
is a specific promise to a specific people.
“And this is the promise which He Himself made to us: eternal life.” (1Jo 2:25 NAS See
also 2Pe 3:13; Tit 1:1-3)
“… those who have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance. ”
(Heb 9:15 NAS)
