2.2 MDA-e-XP Common Features

MDA-e-XPs are FP4-based media dependent adapters with capacity of up to
750 Gb/s full-duplex (FD) throughput. The MDA-e-XPs house the forwarding plane
and associated memory components and perform all MAC layer and physical layer
functions. The modules also provide the physical input/output interfaces for optical
cables.

MDA-e-XPs operate only with IOM5-e line cards. See IOM and Chassis
Compatibility, section 2.4 for more information.

MDA-e-XPs support several types of optical transceivers and flexible breakout

options.

The 6-port Universal QSFP28 and 12-port Universal QSFP28 MDA-e-XPs use
QSFP+ and QSFP28 optical transceivers to support data rates of 10GE, 40GE, and
100GE with breakout options.

The 3-port Universal QSFP-DD MDA-e-XP uses QSFP+, QSFP28, QSFP-DD, and
QSFP56-DD optical transceivers to support data rates of 10GE, 40GE, 100GE, and
400GE with breakout options.

The 6-port Universal QSFP-DD MDA-e-XP uses QSFP+, QSFP28, and QSFP-DD
optical transceivers to support data rates of 10GE, 40GE, 100GE, and 400GE with
breakout options.

The 3-port CFP2-DCO MDA-e-XP uses CFP2 and CPF2-DCO transceivers to

support data rates of 100GE; this module does not support breakout options.

The 16-port SFP28 + 2-port QSFP28 MDA-e-XP uses SFP+, SFP28, QSFP+ and
QSFP28 transceivers to support data rates of 10GE, 25GE, 100GE and 10 x 10GE
with breakout options.

Contact your Nokia technical support representative for more information about
optical transceivers.

All MDA-e-XPs are field-installable, hot-swappable, and field-replaceable. See

2.4 IOM and Chassis Compatibility

The MDA-e-XPs can operate with the following IOMs:

• IOM5-e module—where MDA-e-XPs are pluggable and must be installed in an

IOM5-e, as described in the 7750 SR IOM5-e Installation Guide
In this configuration, the MDA-e-XPs are compatible with all IOM5-e variants
installed in a 7750 SR-12e chassis. The 7750 SR-12e chassis must have the
following SFM/CPM modules installed in order to use the IOM5-e:
- 7750 SR SFM6-12e + CPM5 (3HE13505AA)
- 7750 SR Mini-SFM6-12e (3HE12331AA)
• 7750 SR-1 chassis—where the MDA-e-XPs are installed directly in the
MDA-e-XP slots in the front of the 7750 SR-1 chassis
In this configuration, the MDA-e-XPs interoperate with the IOM5-e that is fixed
and integrated with the CPM in the 7750 SR-1 chassis.

3.2 Provisioning MDA-e-XPs

You can provision chassis slots, cards (IOMs), and MDAs either before or after the
modules are physically installed in the chassis. To configure the modules, you must
be able to access your router by a console, SSH, or Telnet connection. SSH is a
secure communications protocol while Telnet is not. SSH is enabled by default. Refer
to your router hardware installation guide for more information.

MDA-e-XPs require that the chassis card slot and IOM5-e card type be provisioned
before the MDA slot and MDA type. You cannot configure ports until the MDA is
configured.

Preprovision components in the following order:

1. Chassis slot number

2. Card type
3. MDA slot number
4. MDA type
5. Connectors and Ports

The provisioning method depends on your chassis and IOM type:

• For the 7750 SR-1 chassis, which has an internal IOM5-e, see Provisioning
MDA-e-XPs in a 7750 SR-1 Chassis, section 3.2.1.
• For the 7750 SR-7, 7750 SR-12, and 7750 SR-12e chassis that support
pluggable IOM5-e modules, see Provisioning MDA-e-XPs in an IOM5-e,
section 3.2.2.

3.2.1 Provisioning MDA-e-XPs in a 7750 SR-1 Chassis

The 7750 SR-1 chassis has an integrated CPM/IOM that is represented in the CLI as
card 1. The slot and IOM must be provisioned in the 7750 SR-1 chassis before the
MDA-e-XP can be provisioned.

In the config context, use the following CLI commands and syntax examples to
provision the 7750 SR-1 chassis slot and IOM-1. See the 7750 SR-1 Chassis
Installation Guide for more information.

Command Syntax Example

Step 1. card slot-number card 1

After the IOM is replaced and the MDAs are installed in the IOM, the card, MDA,
connectors and ports can be re-enabled (no shutdown).

If you are replacing the IOM with a different IOM or removing the IOM completely,
then you must perform the same shutdown operation described above and remove
any services or interfaces that include references to ports on the IOM, remove any
connector configuration, and remove the MDAs and card configuration.

If the MDAs use connectors, remove the connector breakout configurations and shut
down the connectors:

Command Example
Step 1. port port-id connector no breakout port 1/2/c1 connector no breakout
Step 2. port port-id shutdown port 1/2/c1 shutdown

The modules must be handled such that the orientation is correct before, during, and
after installation. When the MDA-e-XP is inserted into the 7750 SR-1 chassis or
IOM5-e, the MDA-e-XP module must be oriented with the metal plate facing up. In
contrast, when the MDA-e-XP module is at rest on an anti-static surface, the module
must be turned upside down so that the module rests on the metal plate, not the
interior components. See Figure 8. Table 6 identifies the key items in the figure.

4.2 Warnings and Notes

Danger:

• Fiber-optic equipment can emit laser or infrared light that can injure your eyes. Never
look into an optical fiber or connector port. Always assume that fiber-optic cables are
connected to a light source.
• Pluggable optic modules are very hot while in use. Touch only the handle on the bail
when removing the module. Allow the module to cool before further handling.

Warning:

• When installing an optical transceiver, you must make sure that the transceiver is
oriented properly to avoid causing damage to the transceiver or the module.
• Make sure that the safety cap on the transceiver is inserted while you install or remove
the transceiver. Only remove the safety cap when you are ready to attach network
cables.
• When a transceiver is removed from a port, it must be replaced by a transceiver or a
dust cover.
• Use only approved fiber-optic devices in MDA-e-XP ports.
• Before using the optics, verify that the optical path is in compliance with the parameters
of the optical components. In particular, verify any minimum attenuation requirements
for the optics. If minimum attenuation requirements are not met, the optical receiver
components may be permanently damaged.
• Electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage can occur if router components, including
transceivers, are mishandled. Always wear an ESD-preventive wrist or ankle strap and
always connect an ESD strap to the grounding plug on the front of the chassis.

Caution:

• Always place router components on an anti-static surface.

• Do not exceed the recommended minimum bend radius for fiber-optic cables.
AT&T TP-76450 specifies 1.0 in. (25.4 mm) inside radius for single fibers.

Note:

• Discard transceivers according to all local laws and regulations.

• Transceivers can be installed and replaced without disabling the interfaces.
• Transceivers are keyed to prevent incorrect insertion.

4.3 Preparation of Fiber Cables

Clean the connector on the fiber cable before inserting it into the transceiver to
prevent the transfer of small particles and contaminants to the transceiver. If you
switch a transceiver from one port to another, ensure that you clean the fiber
connectors before reinserting them.

Apply high standards when inspecting and cleaning fiber connectors. Use a “dry”
cleaning method to clean fiber connectors. To clean the connector, you can use one
of the following methods:

• wipe the side and end of the ferrule with a lint-free alcohol-dampened cloth
• blow dry the ferrule with compressed air and inspect for lint; do not insert the
compressed air nozzle into the receptacle

4.4 EMI/Dust Covers

EMI/dust covers must be inserted into all MDA ports that do not have a transceiver
installed. Figure 14 shows an EMI/dust cover used for QSFP+ and QSFP28 ports.

4.5 Locking Mechanisms

Transceivers approved by Nokia can use different lock and release methods.
Possible lock and release mechanisms include:

• locking handle—a locking handle or lever on the front of the transceiver that you
gently raise or lower to insert or remove the transceiver from the port
• bail—a bar or latch in the front of the transceiver that you pull down and outward
to release the module
• tabs—tabs on the sides or bottom of the transceiver that you press inward to
release the module

5.9 LED Indicators

Beginning in SR OS 15.1.R4, LED indicators are divided into two types, depending
on the connector configuration. A connector in this context is defined as a physical
port equipped with an optical transceiver.

• LEDs for single-port connectors are described in LEDs for Single-port

Connectors, section 5.9.1.
• LEDs for multi-port connectors are described in LEDs for Multi-port Connectors,
section 5.9.2. In this configuration, the Lnk (link) LED features a blink sequence
that is used to identify issues or fault conditions for each port within a multi-port
connector. The Act (activity) LED remains off.

5.9.2.1 Blink Sequence

Multi-port connectors support a blink sequence on the Lnk (link) LED to identify an
issue or fault condition for each port within a connector. The Lnk LED blink sequence
occurs only when a break-out optic is installed and only if there is an issue with a port
in that connector. The sequence can be initiated by an issue such as a condition in
which an optic is installed but no link is present.

The blink sequence is as follows:

1. The link LED is solid amber for 2.75 s, indicating that a fault condition exists on
one of the ports of a multi-port group and that the blink sequence identifying the
state of each break-out port is about to begin.
2. There follows a sequence of green or amber blinks, each with a duration of
0.75 s. The LED is unlit for 0.25 s between blinks. Each blink represents an
individual port in the multi-port group displayed in sequence beginning with port
1 and ending with the last port of the multi-port group: port 1 to port 4 for 4x10GE
multi-port connectors, and port 1 to port 10 for 10x10GE multi-port connectors.
The color of each blink indicates the port state: green meaning that the port is
active and has a communication link established or the port is disabled or shut
down, or amber meaning that there is no link present.
Figure 28 shows an example of the Lnk (link) LED sequence for a 10x10GE
multi-port connector when an issue or condition occurs on ports 3, 6, and 8.

Figure 28 Example: Port Indicators for a 10x10GE Multi-port Connector

Legend:

2.75 s Solid Amber

0.75 s Blink Green

0.75 s Blink Amber

27470

3. After the last port blink, the LED is unlit for 0.25 s. The sequence repeats until
all issues and conditions for all ports are rectified.

When the issue or condition with the port or ports is rectified, the Lnk LED is lit solid
green unless another issue or condition is present. If an issue or condition is cleared
during the display of the sequence, the sequence completes for all ports, then the
Lnk LED turns solid green.

MDA-e-XP Installation Guide MDA-e-XP Features and LEDs

If the Lamp Test (LT) is initiated, the blink sequence is stopped and the LT test
behavior is presented. After the LT completes, the system software performs a new
evaluation of the status of the multi-port connector and the Lnk (link) LED displays
either solid green or another blink sequence.

If local troubleshooting does not clear the amber blinks, further investigation must be
conducted using the CLI. The CLI presents the condition for the problem ports as a
port disabled or shut down, optics installed but no link present, or no activity.
