Once the Module boot up is complete, it begins to discover the VLAN. The
operator can also provide the Module with the correct VLAN ID using
suboption-128 of DHCP Option-43 or DHCP Option-125. Once the VLAN is
discovered the Module uses the VLAN ID for its LAN interface.
Note: Dynamic AP VLAN discovery will not be performed if AP VLAN is set
statically.
You can assign a static IP through CLI using the following steps:
1. Follow instructions in Connecting to Nokia AirScale Wi-Fi Module AC210m
using administrative computer to prepare and connect the AP.
2. Change IP discover mode to AP-STATIC-CTRL-STATIC by executing the
following command:
apadmin@NokiaAP> set ap-ip-discomode <2>
3. Set IP address of NTP server as described in Assigning the NTP server IP
address section.
4. To set IP address of AP execute the following command:
set ap-ip <ipaddress> netmask <address> gw<ipaddress>
Note: Setting of AP IP address will reboot the system. When prompted for,
enter Yes to apply the settings.
(Or)
To set the IP address of AP and cWLC together, execute:
set ap-ip <ipaddress> netmask <address> gw<ipaddress>
[cwlc1-ip <ipaddress>] [cwlc2-ip <ipaddress>] [ap-vlan <1 to
4094>]
The cwlc IP must be the Access network IP address which will be available
in Configure > System > Settings of cWLC GUI page.
The cWLC IP2 can be set if there is another cWLC available which the AP
can connect to during failure scenarios.
5. If cWLC IP address is not set as per Step 4, then login to the AP CLI using
the AP IP address as set in step 4. Enter username as apadmin and
password as Admin12#. Execute the following command to set the IP
address of cWLC;
apadmin@NokiaAP> set cwlc-ip <IP address1> [IP address2]
Configure DHCP server to include the NTP server address(es) as Option 42.
Procedure to configure a DHCP Option 42 varies depending on the DHCP
server that is used by the operator. For information on configuring DHCP with
Option 42, see the documentation provided with the DHCP server software.
An example to configure two NTP servers IP on ISC DHCP server running on
Linux machines is detailed below:
1. Log in to the DHCP server through a terminal.
2. Go to /etc/dhcp directory.
3. View and edit dhcpd.conf .
4. In the subnet section, execute:
option ntp-servers <NTP-SERVER-IP1>,<NTP-SERVER-IP2>;
5. Save the changes.
6. Restart the DHCP server to apply the new settings.
In this method, the module learns the IP address of NTP through Domain
Name Server (DNS). The DNS must be configured to return NTP IP address
in response to nokiantp.<ApDomainName>, where <ApDomainName > is
the domain name of the module.
As part of the module IP address assignment through DHCP, the module
receives the ApDomainName (DHCP option 15) and DNS server IP address
(DHCP option 6) from the DHCP server. Subsequently, the module requests
the DNS server to resolve nokiantp.< ApDomainName>. Once the DNS
acknowledges with the NTP IP address, the module uses the address as the
NTP server.
You can configure the NTP server IP address manually on the module CLI
using the following steps:
1. Prepare and connect to the module. For more information on connecting to
the module, see Connecting to Nokia AirScale Wi-Fi Module AC210m
using administrative computer.
2. Login to the module CLI.
3. To set NTP execute:
apadmin@NokiaAP>set ntp-server <IP address1> [IP address2]
Note: IP address 2 is optional
If NTP server IP address is not configured through DHCP, DNS or CLI, the
module uses the cWLC IP address as the NTP server and there are no
additional settings required to enable this on the module.
If the NTP server IP address is not configured through DHCP, DNS or CLI, the
module uses pool.ntp.org as the NTP server and there are no additional
settings required to enable this on the module.
In this method, the module learns the IP address(es) of cWLC through Domain
Name Server (DNS). The DNS must be configured to return cWLC IP
address(es) in response to nokiacwlc.<ApDomainName>, where
<ApDomainName > is the domain name of the module.
As part of module IP address assignment through DHCP, the module receives
the ApDomainName (DHCP Option 15) along with the DNS server IP address
(DHCP option 6) from the DHCP server. Subsequently, the module requests
the DNS server to resolve nokiacwlc.< ApDomainName>. Once the DNS
acknowledges with the cWLC IP address(es), the module uses the
address(es) to connect to a controller.
The procedure for configuring DHCP with Option 6 and Option 15 vary
depending on the DHCP server that is being used by the operator. For more
information on configuring DHCP with Option 6 and Option 15, see the
documentation provided with the DHCP server software.
An example to configure DNS server and domain name on an ISC DHCP
server running on Linux machine is detailed below:
1. Log in to the DHCP server through a terminal.
2. Go to /etc/dhcp directory.
3. View and edit dhcpd.conf .
4. In the subnet section, execute:
option domain-name "<your domain name>";
option domain-name-servers < dns server ip address>;
5. Save the changes.
6. Restart the DHCP server to apply new settings.
In this method, the module learns the cWLC IP address(es) automatically from
DHCP Option 125 (Vendor Specific Information option) within the DHCP
messages.
RFC 2132 defines the DHCP Option 60 (vendor class identifiers). This option
is used by DHCP clients to identify the vendor type and configuration of a
DHCP client. The information is a string of n octets, which is interpreted by the
servers. You can define a specific vendor class identifier to convey a particular
configuration or other identification information about a client.
Nokia AirScale Wi-Fi Module AC210m is configured to send NokiaWiFi as the
Vendor Class Identifier in DHCP discover messages.
RFC 3925 defines the DHCP Option 125 (Vendor Identifying Vendor-Specific
Information Option). This option is used by clients and servers to exchange
vendor specific information. You can set the definition and the format of
vendor specific information based on your preferences.
The Enterprise number is used to identify an enterprise. The Enterprise
number for Nokia is 28458 (0x6F2A).Further Nokia AirScale Wi-Fi uses sub-
options in TLV format within Option 125. The cWLC IP is encoded in the sub-
option 127 in the following format:
sub-option-code+length+value
sub-option-code 127 (Hexadecimal)
Length - number of IP addresses x 4 (IPv4)
Value IP address(es)
When DHCP server receives NokiaWiFi as a Vendor Class Identifier (Option-
60) in DHCP discover messages, it must include cWLC IP(s) within Option
125 in DHCP offer message to the module.
The procedure for configuring DHCP Option 125 vary depending on the DHCP
server that is being used by the operator. For more information on configuring
DHCP with Option 125, see the documentation provided with the DHCP server
software.
An example to configure DHCP Option 125 on configuring an ISC DHCP
server running on Linux machine is detailed below:
1. Log in to the DHCP server through a terminal.
2. Go to /etc/dhcp directory.
3. View and edit dhcpd.conf
4. Type the following at the beginning of the DHCP configuration file:
option vendor-identifying-vendor-specific code 125 = string;
5. In the subnet section, execute:
class "NokiaWiFi"
{
In this method, the module learns the cWLC IP address(es) automatically from
DHCP Option 60 (Vendor Specific Information option) within the DHCP
messages.
Nokia AirScale Wi-Fi Module AC210m is configured to send NokiaWiFi as the
Vendor Class Identifier in DHCP discover messages (Option 60).
RFC 2132 defines DHCP Option 43 (vendor-specific information). This option
is used by clients and servers to exchange vendor specific information. You
can set the definition and format of vendor specific information based on your
preference.
Nokia AirScale Wi-Fi uses sub-options in TLV format within Option 43. The
cWLC IP is encoded in the sub-option 127 in the following format:
sub-option-code+length+value
where
sub-option-code is set to 127 (Hexadecimal)
Length - number of IP addresses x 4 (IPv4)
Value - IP address(es)(Hexadecimal)
When DHCP server receives NokiaWiFi as Vendor Class identifiers (Option-
60) in DHCP discover messages, it must include cWLC IP within DHCP offer
message to the module.
Note: Nokia Airscale Wi-Fi Release 16 does not support sub-option in DHCP
option 43. A different vendor class identifier (NokiaWifiAp) is used in option 60.
For Modules operating on Release 16 version of the software, you must add
Option 43 configuration without sub option in the DHCP server. Alternatively,
while working on multiple releases the user is advised to use DHCP Option
125 for Modules operating on newer releases and use DHCP Option 43 for
Modules operating on older releases (Release 16).
The procedure for configuring DHCP Option 43 vary depending on the DHCP
server is being used by the operator. For more information on configuring
DHCP with Option 43, see the documentation provided with the DHCP server
software.
In this method, the cWLC IPs are configured on the module using CLI. To
configure the cWLC IP on the module perform the following steps:
1. Prepare and connect to Module. See Connecting to Nokia AirScale Wi-Fi
Module AC210m using administrative computer to prepare and connect to
the module.
2. Log in to the module CLI.
3. Set the module IP discover mode to AP_Dynamic_Ctrl_Static (1) Or
AP_Static_Ctrl_Static (2) by executing:
apadmin@NokiaAP> set ap-ip-discomode <1 or 2>
4. Set the cWLC IP address by executing:
apadmin@NokiaAP> set cwlc-ip <IP address1> [IP address2]
Note: IP address 2 is optional
Note: Setting of cWLC IP address will reboot the system. When prompted for,
enter Yes to apply the settings.
The DHCP server must be configured to allocate the module IP address, DNS
IP address, NTP server IP address(es), and the cWLC IP address(es) to the
module. The module will use the provided details to connect to the controller.
Refer the following sections for DHCP configurations:
• Assigning the IP dynamically through DHCP
• Configuring DHCP with Option 42
• Configuring DHCP with Option 125 Or Configuring DHCP with Option
43
Along with all the configurations applicable for private venue, configure cWLC
FQDN in AP CLI (AP comes enabled for this pre-configuration). During
deployment, the pre-configuration of cWLC address as FQDN gives the
operator the flexibility to change cWLC IP address, without disturbing the
AP/Module.
Controller and Captive Portal is reachable over internet using public IP
address. AP uses the public NTP server (NTP.org) IP Address for UE and the
Wi-Fi module is served by the DHCP Server in the Venue.
A factory reset is required while redeploying AP from a public to private venue.
To enable the AP for public venue deployment, the following settings need to
be done:
• Wi-Fi AP mode must be set to Dynamic-Static in which the AP address
will be obtained via DHCP but cWLC address will be taken from CLI
Note:
• Factory mode is set to Dynamic-Dynamic, hence this needs to be
changed prior to the deployment of AP in the venue to Dynamic-Static.
• Wi-Fi AP supports CLI command to set either cWLC IP or cWLC FQDN
statically and DNS server.
Once the settings mentioned above are completed, and the AP is powered on,
it performs DHCP and configures its own IP address.
After this phase,
• If cWLC FQDN is configured in AP, it resolves cWLC FQDN connects to
the corresponding IP address.
• If cWLC IP is configured, it connects to the corresponding IP address.
